1939 Register

Postby janmlawson » Thu May 10, 2018 2:59 pm

I wonder if everyone in the country registered? I cannot find my grandad, Robert Edgar Clarke born 20 Apr 1901. He is not with his wife in Manchester. I thought I had him in the Colne Valley but the person listed as his wife on the register at that address isn't my grandma. Unfortunately there are lots of Robert Clarkes and the filter on Ancestry is terrible. Help please.

Not everyone was registered on the due date. For example, anyone serving in the armed forces was not as they were already accounted for. Some didn't register initially because they thought they might be conscripted. Foreign nationals were not registered either. Have a look on the National Archives site for more detailed information on the Register. Incidentally, I couldn't find a relative because his date of birth had been blurred on the original and then mis-transcribed. I found him later when looking for another person. Hope that is some help.

Have you tried finding him on FMP?

I've already found people on Ancestry that I've searched high and low for on FMP and the other way round - easy to find my grandmother on FMP but she's been mistranscribed on Ancestry. I only found her on Ancestry because, unlike FMP you can search on full date of birth instead of just the year and I knew where she was.

I agree with phsvm. I have had to use both Ancestry and FMP to find individuals because, particularly on Ancestry, the transcriptions have been very poor.

Hi
I've had a look on FMP and he's the only Robert Clark(e) with that birth date give or take a year so it's him or he's not on there.
Sorry

Thanks everyone. I found who I thought was him on FMP originally and decided it must be him in Colne - which isn't that far from Manchester - then I had doubts. Most of my family weren't where I thought they were in 1939 so maybe I should just accept he is living with 2 strangers away from home.

Robert Clarke in Colne Valley could be the chap who married Lizzie Hirst in 1927

Thanks ianbee that Robert Clarke is probably not mine. Maybe he was doing something military as he was only 38 at the time. Not knowing is not the end of the world.
