My aunt died while on holiday in Spain...

Postby pforkes » Sun May 06, 2018 8:10 pm

My English aunt passed away while on holiday in Spain in 2009.

The British General Register Office does not have a record of her death.

Years ago, I was given a web address (that was in Spanish - that I do not speak) and so I did not get anywhere. Now, a friend who speaks Spanish has offered to help, but now I have lost the web page of office records office of Spain.

Do any of you know the web address of the official records office of Spain?

Thanks.

This article may help (https://www.familysearch.org/wiki/en/Sp ... al_Records). It may be that the death was registered at the British Embassy (in Madrid) or British Consulates (in other parts of Spain and Spanish Islands). You will of course need to know where in Spain (mainland or islands) that she died in. I note you refer to the 'British' GRO, if she was Scottish her death may have been registered at Scotland's People.

There is a previous topic "George Hughes??" who died in Spain.

Perhaps links provided on that topic may be of relevance.

You can enter a web address in Google Translate if the webpage is in Spanish, and see the English translation.

The British General Register Office does not have a record of her death.

What exactly does that mean? There is no British GRO. Have you specifically asked Overseas Section?

Forgive me. I now live in the USA and I wanted to distinguish it from any other office of records.

My aunt was English and she died in Benidorm, Alicante.

The British General Register Office does not have a record of her death.

But how did you reach that conclusion?

Have you checked the GRO indexes of overseas deaths? Have you specifically asked GRO Overseas Section if the have a record of her death in Benidorm?

I contacted the GRO (through their overseas section) and they told me that they did not have her death record and they suggested that I contact the Spanish authorities.

It was a few years ago when I contacted them and I have managed to lose that email.
