doris deacon

Help please to find the mother of Doris Deacon born 1 Jul 1909 according to her father Charles Inman Deacon's military record. The only birth record I can find says Howson which, as far as I know, her father had no connection to. I thought her mother was Leah Starkey but can't find the information to support it. Thanks

The baptism record shows Doris as the daughter of Charles Edmund Deacon and Harriet.

Don't you think you should get the birth certificate?

I am assuming that the man you are referring to is the man who states on his army record that he was born in 1880 in Bradford. I say this only because it appears that he was actually born in 1870 in Bradford registration district according to his birth registration and what looks to be him appears on census returns with father Joseph in Bradford in 1871 and 1881.

Also girls with the same names as both the daughters he mentioned on the service record appear to have been registered with mothers maiden name HOWSON. He states on the same record that Leah Starkey whom he married in 1897 was a spinster. Could Leah have previously been married and a mistake made on the enlistment form? Or could Charles have had another relationship whilst married? As Peter suggests, the actual certificate will give extra detail.

I'm not sure if I've read the initial post correctly.... isn't the birth certificate what can't be found?

Sorry - ermin79 - your post came in while I was writing.....

No problem Trace, I've often done the same! I read the original query as being that on his army enlistment papers Charles Inman Deacon has stated he has a daughter called Doris born 01/07/1909.

On finding what I think are the same enlistment papers from the OPs original post, they state the following:

Charles Inman Deacon married Leah Starkey (spinster) 29/11/1897 Sheffield.
He also states he has two daughters: Doris born 01/07/1909 Leeds and Emma Eliza born 10/02/1914 Rotherham.

There are two birth registrations for the same names:

Doris DEACON registered Jul - Sept 1909 Leeds

Emma E (shows as Eliza on the new index) DEACON registered Jan-March 1914 Rotherham

Both show on the new GRO index as mothers maiden name HOWSON.

I can find no other Doris Deacons or Emma Eliza Deacons registered in those quarters. It is of course possible that it is complete coincidence. Without ordering the birth certificate/s it is not possible to know if the birth dates match for example. Maybe the Deacon children referred to by the OP were never registered?

The marriage of Charles Deacon and Leah Starkey is clearly in Dec qtr 1897 in Sheffield. (Note that Leah Deacon appears in the Sheffield District death register of Sept 1919).

There is a birth registration for a Doris Deacon in the September Qtr of 1908 with no mothers name shown. This birth appeared in the Stone district of Staffordshire and may be worth checking out. This is on the GRO website.

In the 1901 Census Charles and Leah are living at Ecclesall Bierlow (which I presume is Eccleshall, Staffs) which is about 6 miles from Stone. I think this may be the registration janmlawson is looking for.

Baptism of Emma Deacon in Sheffield in 1914 has her parents as Charles Inman and Leah.

Possible?

Leah Starkey appears to be with her Muschamp grandmother in 1881.

Nice thought, but Ecclesall Bierlow is near Sheffield, and is not to be confused with EcclesHall near Stone, Staffs.

Note different spellings of Ecclesall and Eccleshall
