Odd death record

Postby pollymac » Wed Apr 18, 2018 9:04 am

This death record is a mystery. Apparently Henny Mcleod died aged 1 day. However the cause of death is 'Supposed diptheria, 4 days'.
Also, there does not appear to be a birth record for her either.

If the cause of death is correct what about the Mother? Is there a death for her? My reasoning would be that the baby caught the disease whilst in the womb.

Have you been able to find the burial record, that may hold more information?

Whether she lived 1 or 4 days it was hardly time to register the birth, especially if she was poorly, and it wasn't mandatory in 1860.

The same couple had another child whom they also called Henny a year later. She died, aged 15 months in 1862, cause of death unknown on the death record. The mother, Isabella, died in 1869 from consumption having suffered for seven years. All the deaths were uncertified with no medical attendant present. This was very common in this quite remote area of the Highlands of Scotland.
I do have copies of records from the burial ground but they do not include any for this family.
