Queen Alexandra - Maid of Honour (Aldershot)

Postby MoVidger » Mon Apr 16, 2018 5:46 pm

I am in the process of putting together a long-overdue biographical sketch on my grandmother (whom I grew-up with). When I was a child, I recall her reminiscing that she was a Maid of Honour to Queen Alexandra on at least two separate occasions. Being young, I neglected to ask her for details. :( However, I do recall that both occasions occurred when my grandmother was a teenager in Aldershot.
I know that Edward VII and Queen Alexandra visited Aldershot in 1902, and the following year they occupied the Royal Pavillion in March. So I presume these were the royal visits in which my grandmother served as Maid of Honour. She served in a "wardrobe" capacity, if that includes handing bath towels to the Queen. :D

Would temporary royal service have been noted at the time? I'm not holding my breath, but just thought I would ask the question anyway.

As always, many thanks for Forum assistance!

You might like to look at this entry from Wikipedia (but don't necessarily assume it is correct)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Household ... _of_Honour. Any records should be held in the Royal Archives in Windsor Castle, the archives often don't release any records but you could try if your ancestor is one of those listed.

Records of Royal Household staff from 1660 to 1924 have been digitised and made available online by Find My Past at http://www.findmypast.co.uk.

Perhaps you may find her listed?

Thank you for the tips junkers and MayHam. I have tried to access FMP throughout the day, but have had no luck. Hope it's back to normal tomorrow. I'd be very surprised if my grandmother is mentioned in the records you suggested. She only seemed to be a "go-to" maid of honour when the Queen was visiting/residing in Aldershot circa 1902/1903. When my granny told me the story years ago, she acted as though it wasn't a very big deal. :o
