David Halloran (c.1808-1876) - Brick Wall

Postby RobOH » Sun Apr 15, 2018 9:17 am

Hello - I’m trying to take my paternal Irish ancestry back a stage but I’ve hit a brick wall. I know that Irish Records are difficult pre-1800 but would welcome any thoughts.

My x3 great grandfather was David Halloran. I have no birth record but he first appears in a parish record of marriage in Cobh/Queenstown, Cork, on 30 Nov 1837 to Mary Guilly. One of the sponsors is a Tim Halloran, but I don’t know whether that’s his father or another relative.

David worked at the Royal Naval Hospital, Haulbowline Island, Cork, retiring in 1873. He died on 24 April 1876 aged 67, giving a rough birth date of 1808.

Any advice on how to go back further would be gratefully received!

for reference the marriage took place in the Catholic Church. Baptism records for the parish go back to 1812, probably not far enough for a record of your David .. assuming he was for this area originally. see Cobh RC register images (NLI)

I dont see any Halloran baptisms in the parish between 1812 and 1832 (first 20 years available) and as far as I can see there's only one other Halloran marriage in the (RC) parish between 1827 and 1847, and that is for a David Halloran to Margaret Hays on the 8th Jan 1846.

There was a "Tim Halloran" baptised 14 Jul 1819 in Kilmurry Parish, Co. Cork, to Michael and a name I can't read. ... AP/1309517

There was also an "Ellen Hallaran" baptised 2 Oct 1814 in Cobh Parish, Co. Cork to Michael and Ellen (Mara?). ... AP/1371759

David & Mary's first child, Michael, was born 11 Nov 1838 in Cobh Parish. David Mara and Johanna Hurley were witnesses. I don't know if this was the same David Mara who witnessed the wedding? ... ast&page=2

David & Mary's second child, "Ellen Haloran," was born 31 Oct 1840 in Cobh Parish. "Timy Haloran" and Ellen Guillee were witnesses. ... ast&page=2
