I am trying to find out more about my great grandfather. He was born in Italy on 6 Nov 1882. His father was Pasquale but I don't know anything about him except he was dead when Giovanni married in 1918. In Givoanni's marriage certificate Pasquale was described as of independent means for profession. Giovanni married Maria Kraft in 1918.
According to my grandmother she thought her father Giovanni came to England around 1900. He went on to become known as John and was a gents hairdresser. He died in Hendon in 1969.
I can't go back any further as I don't know how to access records in Italy.
I wonder if anybody can help.

There is another forum discussion on this https://www.genesreunited.co.uk/boards/ ... ad/1363903
Did the blood line turn out to be Thorvald Jensen, not Giovanni as suggested there?

A tree on ancestry (Purser Family Tree) would appear to suggest that Thorvald was a tailer in 1901 census and somehow off the scene by the 1911, when Maria was living with someone calling themselves John Jensen (Hairdresser), but believed to be Giovanni by the tree owner with a nationality of Italian. Maria's nationality is given as Swedish.
If "John Jensen" is actually Giovanni, although they did not marry until 1918 then there would appear to be some subterfuge going on back then. It appears that Maragert Torella was registered in 1906 as Margaret Jenson (mother Kraft) with a handwritten entry into the registration index.
Who is Margaret's father?

That is my family tree on Ancestry and as you can see the Torella line stops at Pasquale with no information.
I have concluded that John Jensen was Giovanni and therefore my grandmother's father. I think there was some saving of blushes going on.
Interestingly I can't find anything about Thorvald Jensen and why he and Maria (my grandmother's mother) split, whether they divorced or not and where he ended up.

That is all correct Elsabels. Giovanni did become known as John. Sadly I am struggling finding out anything about his ancestry.
