Looking for Edwin Annetts

Postby phsvm » Thu Apr 05, 2018 6:44 pm

Can anyone have better luck than me in finding Edwin Alfred Annetts on the 1939 Register?

I've tried every which way I can but can't seem to locate him. I don't have his exact date of birth but it was registered in the June Q 1885 and as far as I am aware he did not marry. He came from Berkshire.

He's not the Charles E Annetts in Walthastow - that's his cousin - nor is he Alfred Annetts in Alton whose dob is October so his birth couldn't have been registered the previous June.

I can't find him on any electoral roles either - he's not the Edwin Annetts in Hackney or the one in Surrey.

I would suggest you have another look at the Alfred in Alton. If you do a search on just the surname in 1885 and get all the births in that year......you'll see that there are no births recorded for an Alfred.

Both my father & Grandmother are recorded on 1939 Register with incorrect dob's.....

There could be a school admission record for him in Berkshire
Beedon Church of England School
admitted 17 June 1889
Annetts Alf Edwin
born 16.6.1885
parent/guardian Fred, address Chilton

On the same page, admitted 17 Feb 1890
Nellie Annetts, born 14.3.1887 (parent/guardian Fred, address Chilton)
Take it she is Christina Nellie.
Both left 22 May 1890

From his d-o-b in 1939, I think Alfred in Alton is likely to be the Alfred Annett registered Dec 1885, Winchester.
The Edwin we are looking for in 1939 may have died in 1968 in Devizes district?

The school admission record is definately the correct Edwin - his parents were Frederick and Selina and they did live in Chilton and he did have a sister Nellie (Christina).

I agree that the Alfred in 1939 is likely to be the one born in Winchester in 1885. The surname does cause problems as the final 'S' is often added or subtracted which causes confusion.

Edwin's great niece (who never knew him) is fairly confident that the death in Devies is him.

in his Army record it says on the front page "granted permission to reside in france for a period of 12 months" And right at the end is an address
62, Rue Royale, Calais.
Is it possible he managed to extend the 12 months and he was there right up until WW2?

I had seen that and I guess that's a possibility. He obviously came back to the UK at some point if the death registration in Devizes is him.

I have just searched ancestry 1939 Register just using Edwin and 1885 and have come across an Edwin A Eynott in Henley, birth 17th Jan 1885, not sure if you have widened your search this way but it may be worth running through all name sounding like 'annetts;, so those starting with e or h, just a thought.

It's amazing what difference it makes having the 1939 Register available on two sites!

Thanks Shendo. More digging needed.

ianbee had found Edwin's school registration which gave a dob of 16 June 1885 but looking on Ancestry at all the dobs for that date with Edwin as first name I haven't traced him yet.

I have however, checked out the Edwin Annetts on the electoral rolls in Surrey in the 1950s and that's not him.
