Need help - french girl's passport

Postby sg44 » Thu Mar 29, 2018 8:34 pm

Good evening
First of all, excuse me for my bad English, but I'm French ;-)
I am researching a French woman, Alice Million (1884-1957), who married in London in 1904 with a French man, Joseph Milliat.
I would like to know when Alice arrived in England and where she lived in this country.
I think she arrived around 1903.
On the day of her marriage in London on May 10, 1904, the marriage certificate states that she lives on 2 Holland Park Avenue in London and that she is a teacher.
thank you so much
Stéphane

Thank you for raising an inquiry about such a remarkable woman. France has a right to be proud.

I regret I could not find a match around 1903 but did find the following:
Name: Alice Milliat
Birth Date: abt 1885
Age: 29 (French citizen, Last permanent residence: Brazil)
Port of Departure: New York, New York, United States
Arrival date: 7 Feb 1914
Port of Arrival: Southampton, England
Ship Name: Avon
Search Ship Database: Search for the Avon in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Shipping line: Royal Mail Steam Packet Company
Official Number: 124665
https://search.ancestry.co.uk/cgi-bin/s ... &fh=0&h=20

I searched the London Gazette online to no avail.

There is one article in the FindMyPast newspapers dated 1935.

There are some historical directories for London. I searched 1904 but didn't find anything.

Also, couldn't find Madame's marriage in London.

Google Books says Monsieur died in early 1908. Unfortunately, I could not find a death record for him in the GRO indexes. https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

Would you happen to know when Monsieur was born or where he was living at the time of his marriage? I gather Holland Park Avenue is in Kensington.

By the way, your English is very good so you would be considered bilingual.
Wish I could reply in French but I'm not as good as you are. :?

I could not find the marriage either.

Is it possible they were married in the French embassy and if so would it then be recorded as a French marriage?

Unfortunately, the British government did not keep records of passengers on ferries between the UK and mainland Europe so direct evidence of her arrival is unlikely.

Thank you all for your very interesting messages.
I have the copy of his marriage certificate, celebrated at the French consulate in London. But what really interests me is to know:
- when she entered British territory (probably between 1900 and 1903)
- If she stayed again later in Great Britain ... (Your information about a stay in Brazil is very interesting, because it is her, unfortunately I do not have a subscription at ancestry website ...)

According to the 1904 marriage certificate you have, Alice's residence was 2 Holland Park Avenue. Not sure if this helps, but the resident at 2 Holland Park Avenue from c1903 to 1911 was this Turkish gentleman and his family:

Name: Garabed Krikor Gulbenkian
Birthplace: Talas, Krissar, Angora
Occupation: Commission Merchant (export/import)
Wife: Marie Gulbenkian
Children: Krikor Gulbenkian, Kripsimi Gulbenkian, Chonchan Gulbenkian, Diran Gulbenkian

The information above is from his 1903 UK Naturalisation record and 1911 census record, both on Ancestry (which I appreciate you do not have a subscription to).

Perhaps Alice Million was hired to teach/tutor this family's children?

Yes, perhaps Alice was a teacher in this family...
And do british archives mention her next husband, Joseph Milliat, who lived at 46 Lydford Road, St Peters Park in London in 1904 ?

Residents at 46 Lydford Road, Paddington in the 1901 census:

Charles Freeman (age 51)
Occupation: Plumber
Birthplace: Farnham, Surrey
One of his sons is...
Arthur Freeman (age 19)
Birthplace: Paddington
Occupation: Clerk (Commercial)

The Freeman family live at another Paddington address in the 1911 census.
