Ancestors in navy/army in census

Postby stefano » Sun Mar 25, 2018 7:37 pm

Would ancestors in the navy or the army be on any censuses. I have a great grandfather who I can not find on 1901 or 1911 censuses. His name is William Turner sometimes using James as a middle name. He was born in 1892 and had a navy boat name on his first sons birth certificate Stanley James Turner 1918.

He wouldn't be in the army or navy in 1901, when he was 8.

Have you rejected these?

Even more interesting, in 1911
201 Ley Street, Ilford
George Turnage Head 49
Sarah Ann Turnage Wife ?
Charles Turner Boarder 21 Single Carman, born Leytonstone Essex
William Turner Boarder 18 Single Labourer Farm, born Leytonstone Essex

Alan came up with a William James Turner in the Royal Navy

What was the name of the vessel on that birth certificate?

The 1911 census was the first census which included soldiers and their families at overseas Army bases, and I think also the first to include men on Royal Navy ships at sea. However, for Army bases in India, I have come across some omissions, so I am sure the overseas information is not 100% accurate,

Cheers

Baptisms of William and his brother from FamilySearch, there was also an older brother Walter

Charles Turner
Christening Date: 23 Nov 1890
Christening Place: St. John Baptist's, Leytonstone, Essex
Birth Date: 30 Mar 1890
Father: Walter Turner
Mother: Annie

William Turner
Christening Date:1 April 1894
Christening Place: St. Margarets, Leytonstone, Essex
Father: Walter Turner
Mother: Annie
(birth registration was Sep 1892)

Those dates would make them 21 and 18 in 1911.
