Purchase one of the Kelly - Halbert certificates and I guess you should get the regiment?
Definitely not the West Ham family.
Possibly that James died Dec qtr 1910, West Ham, age 80.

The other James Kelly and wife Jane, nee Halbert, were back in Ireland by the mid 1870s. Where birth certificates of more children have him as a Barracks Labourer, Royal Barracks.

Good morning Ian and Adrian,

I came online this morning to find your excellent work!

I can tell you for certainly that my wife's ancestor was Elizabeth Jane Kelly born approx 1866 to Stratford and that her parents listed on her wedding cert in Australia in 1888 were James Kelly (Bricklayer) and Jane Smith.

So the Kelley family found in the 1871 census look to be the correct family. I will try to search for Elizabeth's birth cert today off the GRO website.

On a side note, I found James b. 1832 (Widower) in the workhouse in 1911 in Lambeth as a former Bricklayer. Birth place is listed as Lambeth...could this be an error by the enumerator?

Have you had any luck finding when the parent Jane died?

Thank you for all your help so far!

Kind regards

Institutions are notorious for making errors in censuses - either the data isn't collected for someone or the sheer volume of stuff are probable causes. Birthplace=Current Location is a typical error found in all census forms, not just institutions.

Jane was still alive in 1911. Age 78, born Newbridge. Even though she was widowed she gave number of years married - 52 - and recorded that there had been seven children born to her marriage, with six still living.
And the James Kelly-Jane Smith marriage was in Newbridge, 13 Feb 1859!

With son Patrick baptized there, 8 January 1860 (and he is with them in 1871, age 11)

The only plausible death I can see in West Ham district for Jane is March 1922, age 87. That death may have been in the Leytonstone area.

Two possible deaths for James Kelly in West Ham, 1901-1911, I still think the 1910 may be the likelier.
I can't see a burial online for that one. St. Patrick's Roman Catholic Cemetery, Leytonstone, may be a possibility.
