Moorhouse/Morehouse Family Holmfirth/Kirkburton area

Postby genealogist888 » Sat Mar 24, 2018 8:08 pm

Hi, I’m looking of help trying to unpick the Moorhouse family of Holmfirth/Kirkburton.

John Moorhouse b 1809 in Fulstone was my 4x Great Grandfather. He married Hannah Moorhouse, b@1797 in Thurstonland, (presumably a cousin of some sort) in 1835.

I am struggling to reliably identify their parents because of the large number of Moorhouses, and the common use of John as a forename.

If anyone is able to help me break through the tangle I would be really grateful.

Many thanks, Sara

Good Morning and Welcome Sara
It's lovely to see a new person.Let's see what we can do for you.
let's start with the couple's marriage.
The only one I can see for 1835 is at Kirkburton which includes the area of Thurstonland.
John Moorhouse and Hannah Ainley of this parish 30.11.1835
They made their mark
Wit Amos and Mary Moorhouse who signed.

The children baptised at the same church seem to be
Ruth born 28 July 1836 bapt 8.9.1844 ? clothier
And possibly Tom 12.10.1834 s of John and Ann Clothier of Fulstone.

It looks like Sam born c 1832 was the son of Hannah from her first marriage bapt 5.2.1832 born 27.10.1831 to Samuel and Hannah Ainley clothier Fulstone at kirkburton.
Hannah's first marriage 23.3.1818 to Samuel Ainsley is with consent of parents and has witnesses John Rowbottom and James Booth.
The latter tells us nothing as they are the routine witnesses.

The choices we have for a baptism are
John 27 May 1810 born 27 Dec 1809 s of John and Nanny of Foolstone
John 25 Dec 1808 born 22.7.1808 s of John and Martha of Thurstonland.

Hannah of Jo Moorhouse and Sally of Hills 29 Nov 1797
Hannah of John Moorhouse of Foolstone by Betty Syphens 12 weeks 12 June 1797

The obvious clue we seem to have is that Amos Moorhouse present in 1835
There is a Amos bapt 24 Feb 1811 ,born 24 Nov 1810 s of John and Betty of Hillside?
So it looks like Hannah is the daughter of John and Betty and Amos is her brother.
Marriage John of H?ope and Betty Sykes of Thurstonland 25 .6.1792 at Kirkburton.
wit Robert Beeley and Jonas Walker?
I'd guess John Moorhouse age 70 buried Kirkburton 15 Dec 1830 of Holstage ,Marstonland is him.

Is Mary Moorhouse the sister of John born 1809 then?
Yes it looks like it .
John and Martha have no daughter Mary but John and Nanny do.
Mary bapt 17.8.1816 born 11 Dec 1815 d of John and Nanny at Foolstone clothier.
So I'd go with them as John's parents especially as the place of residence also matches.
John Moorhouse married Nancy Hirsch at Kirkburton 2.2.1806
wit James Booth and James Moorhouse

Perhaps John Moorhouse age 70 poor man and Ann 55 Fulstone 1841 is them.

Hi Sara

I'm afraid I cannot assist with your specific enquiry but was drawn to your post because of the name MOORHOUSE. During the course of research into my maternal grandfathers' line FLETCHER, I have come across a lady who married into the family. We have her in our records as Mary Lizzie MOORHOUSE (occasionally known as 'Cissy'). The family also has close ties to Holmfirth and Kirkheaton.

I'm fairly confident on the rest of the info but it has yet to be fully sourced and cited.

Mary Lizzie appears much later in time than you are seeking; 1887-1986 but if you would like more info to see if our research is connected please do not hesitate to contact me.

Headline info is:
Mary Lizzie MOORHOUSE
b.1887 - Netherton, Yorkshire
m. 1907 - Herbert Atkinson FLETCHER - Meltham Mills, Yorkshire
Emigrated - 1912 - Quebec, Canada
d. 1986 - Carleton, Ontario, Canada

I believe that Mary Lizzie's parents were Albert MOORHOUSE and Kate HEBDON, she was one of six children.

I *think* Albert's father was 'Joe' and his father 'Joseph'

Good luck with your research

Ciderdrinker - thank you so much for this.

Your surmising about Tom b.1834 being the son of John and Hannah is correct - he is my 3xgreat grandfather. And Sam was indeed Hannah's son by her first marriage although on a number of the census returns he is listed as a Mooorhouse.

Your rationale for the parents of John and Hannah seems good to me - just need to start tracking them back now!

Thanks again,

Sara

Thanks for getting back to me Woolybully.

Haven't come across a Joseph Moorhouse yet: mine Moorhouses go Edith Mary b1892, George Wright b1870, Tom b1834 and then the two John's as identified by Ciderdrinker but will let you know if I find a connection - always nice to find a new 'cousin' :)
