Plantation records for Ceylon/Sri Lanka 1920’s

Postby lindyb1954 » Thu Mar 22, 2018 1:09 pm

My fiancé’s grandfather went out to Ceylon in 1925 to work on a plantation, his occupation was a joiner. We have the shipping records showing him going out and his wife and children coming home. Are there any records that exist that would show what plantation he worked on. I know it’s a long shot but thought it was work an ask.

Being that he went to Ceylon in 1925, I wonder if he had anything to do with the Tea Research Institute (TRI)? It was established in 1925 to generate new research and technology related to the processing and cultivation of tea. There's lots of TRI information on the internet.
This link describes life on a tea plantation back in the day:

I will look at these sites to see if they throw up anything, but it maybe possible that he went out to a Teak Plantation as a plantation manager as he was a joiner by trade, would this make a difference to where I would need to look?

Really appreciate the help, thank you

I think a link associated with the second link in post 2 would probably be the best chance of locating some information, if you think he went to a teak plantation.
Ferguson's Ceylon Directory

There is a Plantations database on this website, but it sounds as though it is restricted to plantations which were tea plantations.

For general information see the FIBIS Fibiwiki page Ceylon
