Help finding a maiden name

Postby gill233 » Tue Mar 13, 2018 3:07 pm

I'm trying to find the maiden name of my great grandmother. She was born in 1863 in Herefordshire and married my Great grandfather between 1882 and 1885. She was Elizabeth and married James Harris.I have found them in Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorganshire from 1881 onwards in the census returns. She died in 1895 at the age of 32 after giving birth to her fifth child.
I have found my g/grandfathers family, I think, as I could trace his mother back as she is on the census returns but I can't find births or marriages for either James or Elizabeth that look correct. Their names don't help as they are so common. I have found marriages for an Elizabeth Bowen, Elizabeth Beizley and Elizabeth Lloyd to a James Harris and sent for a certificate for Eliz Lloyd. Eliz Lloyd was a widow and James a widower when they married in 1883 and both of full age, is this likely? I have used Ancestry, Family search and the free BMD website.
Any help with where to look next would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Thank you so much!
Elizabeth Beazley was one of the Elizabeths I came up with but I didin't know I could find them at the GRO.
That's a great help will get on to it tomorrow.
Many thanks

Re: Help finding a maiden name again

I am now trying to find details on James Harris 2nd wife who he married two years after his first wife died.
She was Sarah L Harris and was born in Talgarth in Breconshire in 1864 according to the census returns. I have found two marriages for 1897 for James to a Sarah. Is there any way of finding out without sending for both certificates. As far as I know there were no more children so I can't look for a maiden name as before. Any help greatly appreciated.

There are marriages for James Harris to Sarah Pritchard and to Sarah Price in Merthyr district in 1897. Possibilities for both ladies born Talgarth circa 1860 (if they were single in 1897!)

Images of the marriages are on findmypast, partial transcriptions on FamilySearch.
From which the Pritchard one looks the more likely (hoping that one of them is the right one!)
Wales, Glamorgan, Parish Register Marriages, 1837-1922
Name: James Harris
Age: 37y
Marital Status: Widowed
Father's Name: William Harris
Spouse's Name: Sarah Pritchard
Age: 38y
Spouse's Marital Status: Single
Spouse's Father's Name: Thomas Pritchard
Date: 11 Sep 1897
Place: Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan

Ages pretty much match those given in the 1901 and 1911 census, when James and Sarah were 40 and 41, and 50 and 51.
Was James' father called William?
Sarah Price and James Harris who married in Dowlais were both single and too young.

Thank you both very much for all your help. I use Ancestry but Find my Past seems more useful
Sarah Pritchard was my grandmothers wicked step mother!! She often told me how horrible her step mother was.
I can see why James Harris married again, he had five children, the last being a small baby and whilst his mother was living with them she is classed as an imbecile on one of the census returns. Yes, his father was called William. No State to help in those days.
I have a couple of other walls to sort out so will be back again soon.
Many thanks again.
