Mary Ann Parmiter bn 1854??

Postby meekhcs » Mon Feb 05, 2018 6:33 pm

This Lady is a real puzzle.

She was supposedly the daughter and second born child of Phillip Parmiter (1817-1909) and Sarah Jane Smith (1826-1904) who married 29 July 1851 at the RC Church Tottenham, as detailed in the Hereford Journal of 6th August 1851.

Son Philip Joseph was the 1st bn in Q4 1852 and dgtr Catherine Pelham the 3rd bn in Q4 1855, so there is only a narrow window of opportunity!

The only references I have for her are the 1861/1871 and 1881census records.

1861 census Family lived at Lower Bullingham Hereford and Mary Ann recorded as Mary A bn 1854 Lower Bullingham Hereford and was a scholar.

1871census Family lived at Ansty MAry Ann recorded as M>A> bn 1853 Herefordshire

1881 census Family lived Harwood Farm Ansty Mary Ann recordedas MAry Ann bn1855 Herefordshire and was a Governmess, as was her sister Catherine.

.......and that's it! I have drawn a blank with the rest of my research.

The births of all the other children were registered, but of course it is possible that Mary Ann was missed, but I cannot find a suitable marriage or death record for her or any census record after 1881. She just disappears!

All suggestions gratefully received.

Hi
The newspaper announcement of Rosa Rebecca's marriage in 1888 does say that she was the third daughter of Mr. P. Parmiter, of Harwood, Ansty, Wilts, which would be right if Mary Ann is included.

Where did she die? The 1901 census has Philip as a widower.

The Wiltshire Memorial Inscription index on FMP shows that Sarah Jane Parmiter died in 1896 and was buried in Wardour, Wilts, RC Cemetery on Feb 7th, wife of Philip.

Well found again.
Still can't see a death registration for Sarah Jane in the UK. Wherever she died, might Mary Ann have been living there?

Just checked FMP again and it says Sarah Jane died at Harwood which is the name of the farm where the family was living in 1881.

Thanks both of you and I am sorry to waste your time with the wrong death date for Sarah Jane. I was in such a rush I didn't check my post before submitting.

......and yes I an I have been unable find a death registration to match the death given on the Wiltshire Memorial Inscriptions. I have found a few anomalies when using this set of records, but on the whole they are accurate. However, given that Sarah Jane appears on the 1891census but not the 1901 census, there isn't a UK death registration for her of the right time frame.

I had hoped that Mary Ann would surface on the Wiltshire Memorials record set, but no luck so far.

I have found a little website called Wiltshire Footprints which covers the parishes of Wardour Tisbury and Ansty where this line of Parmiters lived after leaving Lower Bullingham, Herefordshire.

I have dropped them an email concerning the deaths of Mary Ann and Sarah Jane. I suspect there was a Family vault or several plots for the Family at Wardour RC Cemetery as several Family members were laid to rest there.

I did consider that Mary Ann may have moved abroad but nothing obvious popped up. I will keep chipping away and hope that I eventually have the same success as I had with Sarah Jane's parents yesterday.

As you're looking at Wiltshire you may find the Wiltshire Online Parish Clerks website of use: http://www.wiltshire-opc.org.uk/genealo ... -directory The coverage varies from parish to parish but there are a lot of transcribed records from a wide range of sources. It's been enormously useful for my Wiltshire ancestors.

JaneyH

Thank you I have already scoured the website and in doing so found the link to Wiltshire Footprints.

Unfortunately there is not an opc for the parish of Tisbury and Wardour and the website admin make it clear they cannot address any queries concerning any Parish that does not have an opc.

The Wiltshire Memorial Inscription Index gives a "burial" date of 7 Feb 1896 for Sarah Jane. By which I presume they mean that was the date of death
The newspaper announcement seems to say that Sarah died on the 8th inst.
But that is also the date of the newspaper!
Whatever, it seems they got it in very quickly.

Local indexes are available on Wiltshire BMD
They have the deaths of Percy John Lever and Charles Hansford in 1896, sub district Tisbury (both buried at Ansty, and have same GRO ref in March 1896, 5a 125). But, again, no Sarah Jane Parmiter.
