Tiverton district was renamed Mid Devon in 1978
So, this death might be a possibility

Well, in 1901 he was in Cullompton (piece 2133 folio 51 page 15)

Florrie Hurley Wife 26 London
Raymond Hurley Son 3 Stockport
William H Hurley Son 2 mo Devon Cullompton

Birth, Sep 1897 Stockport
Turner, Jasper Raymond
mother —

William Henry Hurley then married Florrie Turner in June qtr 1900, Tiverton
Son of same name registered March 1901, Tiverton, mother Turner.

But is he the John R Hurley who married Bertha Luker in 1920?

I'm 99% certain this is the correct Bertha so 'Richard' appears to have been a red herring and he was John Raymond Hurley, possibly known as Raymond.

I'm really trying to find him in 1911. I need to be able to place him in a village about 5 miles from Bertha's home village (Cholsey) in Berkshire prior to WW1 because he appears to be listed on our village WW1 Roll of Honour. Although he is only listed as R Hurley. As the only Hurley I can find anywhere near the vicinity is the John Hurley who married Bertha I'm working on the basis that this is him!

I don't think he can be the one born in Stockport and then in Cullumpton as he'd be too young.

No he wouldn’t be too young. He would have turned 18 in 1915

In 1911 he is on the sheet with the rest of the William H family but then it has been crossed out and says “not in the house”.
I would take that to mean he would normally have been there.
Pence Pool Cottage, Plymtree, Cullompton

Incidentally, the whole rest of the family are “inmates” in 1939
