Ah Mary (Mary Rebecca) is of course the aunt with whom the younger Thomas is living (in Grimsby) in 1851.Born in Sleaford 17 March 1829 (according to baptism record) subsequently married FORTH.
Which gets us no further at all with Thomas senior!!
Not showing up in GRO over a fairly wide timespan.

Assuming you have Emma's birth certificate (as you have exact DOB) who was the informant there? One can assume her father was still around in March 1847 (her conception) though I suppose it is possible, if Thomas had already died/disappeared, the real father was unknown.

I have attached Emma Coales' birth certificate and the informant is her father (Thomas Timpenny Coales).

In the 1861 census, his is back in Doncaster, and living with his father’s father.

Solicitor's clerk
At the end of 1857, Thomas Timpeny Coales was clerk to William Brooks, of Great Grimsby, attorney at law.
Would not yet be 14!

The death notice for Sarah might suggest that her husband had already 'disappeared' by then (though possibly the Hampsons were far better known?).
But why did Emma end up in the Doncaster workhouse rather than with Hampson relatives as one might expect?
And the movements of the Coales family as a whole are certainly a little puzzling, given that they ended up back in their home area where Thomas Timpeny Coales junior spent the rest of his life (not presumably completing his (?) articles in Grimsby).

Well, the death certificates for Lucy Rebecca Coales (died 5th September 1847 in Fisher Gate, Doncaster aged 9 months) and Emma Coales (died 5th June 1851 in the Union Workhouse, Doncaster aged 3) both arrived this morning.

Timas Timpeny Coales (the father) is not the informant to the death of either one so presumably he had abandoned them.

Emma Coales should be on the 1851 census (it was taken on 30th March, 1851) and she died on what looks like the 6th June, 1851 (I have attached a copy of the death record - maybe one of you can confirm the date of the death).

Now I go looking for Emma Coales on the 1851 census (presumably in the workhouse in Doncaster).

I found her in the 1851 census, alone, in the Union Workhouse. (I should use FindMyPast more often.)

If you had read the earlier replies you would have known sooner!

You are right, of course. I had looked for her on Ancestry and had not found her and so put it to one side.

Then (a while later) I looked for her on FindMyPast (I have a subscription and use it almost all of the time for the 1939 Register and nothing else) and found her there.
