Re: 'Honorary' ranks. I came across these from time to time in the Indian service where a soldier would get promoted through the NCO ranks as far as he could go, and then into warrant officer ranks (in the EIC etc that was called Sub-Conductor and then Conductor). Any further promotion, and it did happen, was to Honorary Lieutenant and Honorary Major. However the actual jobs or responsibilities given to such men were not in the nature of 'line' responsibilities so they did not have control over a lot of men, but were rather given other sorts of administrative roles. I recollect one who was put in charge of a museum!

Anyway, I suspect that a similar sort of progression and responsibilities may have applied in HM Army in WWI etc.
