Please help identify this WW1 uniform

Postby Nigel Worwood » Fri Jul 11, 2008 4:16 pm

Hi Can any body identify this WW1 army uniform so that I can identify the Albert Worwood wearing it. I wish the Worwoods could think up new names for their children.

From the "medal drawer" at the NA it could either be the Worcester Regiment or the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry.

Thanks

Nigel,

If no-one on this forum can help can I suggest that you post a copy of your photograph on the Great War Forum at [link=http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/]http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/[/link] which I have always found very helpful.

If the uniform proves to be the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry I will be very interested. My grandfather was in the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry but I have only been able to find out very limited information about him. My grandfather was in the 3rd Battalion, which was the training battalion. He enlisted in September 1914, aged 46 when the upper age for enlistment at this time was 40. His regimental number indicated that he was a pre-war reservist but despite all my searches I have not been able to trace any previous military experience. Unfortunately the DCLI's museum do not have enlistment rolls for the 3rd Battalion and therefore have not been able to help me further. With no photographs of my grandfather a photo of the uniform he would have worn would be tremendous.

Paul, if it does turn out be Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry then I'll get a better copy for you.

Thanks for taking a look. I'll give it a little while then follow up your suggestion.

It is very hard to see any detail on the photo as it is so small, but it looks like he was in a Yeomanry or Cavalry regiment; you can see spurs and a bandolier in the photo, for example. Can you post a clearer image of the cap badge?

The badge is still a little blurred but it is certainly Cavalry or Yeomanry. I note that the only Albert Worwoods who served were in the infantry but there was a Alfred Worwood who was in a Reserve Cavalry Regiment; maybe it is him?
