Please can anyone help with these military photos?

Postby Natasha » Fri Jul 04, 2008 12:06 am

[color="#0000cc"]Hello!
Please can anyone help me to identify my grandfather's unit details or ANY other information from either of these photos?

The photo of the group has my grandfather sitting front row second from left. We have noticed that they all wear quite distinctive caps which have tassle like ends to the tip.

The other photo has my grandfather sitting side on with badges shown on his arm. Does anybody recognise these?

We believe that my grandfather (Leslie James) serviced aircraft in Rhodesia (for at least Christmas 1944 as we have photos from this period.) Some of the photos are labelled with "Guinea Fowl" and "Umtali".

Thanks in advance for any information that you can help me with!

Natasha.

They are Air Force wings on their shoulders and the 'propeller' in the second denotes that he was a LAC. (Leading Aircraftsman)

In 1954 the ranks ran from the bottom, AC1, AC2, LAC, Sac (Senior), Corporal then Sergeant, Flighr Sgt thn Warrant Officer. These were the Non-Comissioned ranks. Then it was the officers.
Interested in the surname SNELL circa 1910, Middlesex. and Claudia Vail nee Snell, living and married in Canada from about 1912/16.

Any information is Crown Copyright, from http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk"
