Police/legal archives?

Postby kingbee1 » Sun Jan 14, 2018 12:52 am

I've just signed up to the British Newspaper Archive and found lots of amusing stories of brushes with the law by people with the same names as a few of my ancestors, which are unfortunately relatively common locally. However, given the reporters rarely bothered to include the person's age, home address or even the Christian name of a wife when she was mentioned, are there any resources I could turn to to find out if they really were my ancestors? I'm sure that court or police records would have the necessary info, but a) are they actually available, and b) where from?
I'm in Durham, but judging by the CRO website, don't think there are any obvious categories ...

Start with the Petty Sessions court records in the area they lived in (in the County Archives).
