Russian ancestors

Postby cordova85 » Wed Jan 10, 2018 9:52 am

Hi I am new to this forum.

I am trying to find when my grandmother came over to this country. On the 1901 census is says she is russian. The first birth I have found is 1895, siblings to my grandmother.
Is there any way to find out when they landed in this country?

They will have come through Europe, so you won't find shipping records.

Did any of the family later apply for naturalisation ? If they did, even many years later, the case papers (which will be at The National Archives at Kew) will give details of the family origins and when they came to the UK.

Coming from Russia (which could mean many different areas) at that time it is likely the family would be Jewish - and you may find the names they used will change, either completely or to anglicised versions, which can make research difficult.

Synagogue records in this country may have a lot of detail, but needs a researcher with specialist knowledge to help.
