Benjamin Waine Help!

Postby hevallen » Wed Jan 10, 2018 9:49 am

Hi I have been researching my paternal great-grandfather Benjamin Waine of South Shields, Durham and have hit a brick wall! Benjamin was born in Cornsay, Durham in September 1872 (although I have found a WW1 medal document stating his DOB in May 1872), parents unknown and I can find no other records for him between his birth and marriage. He married Elizabeth Coade in 1904 and had 4 children - George, Elizabeth, Benjamin and my grandfather Robert (whom emigrated to New Zealand in 1927). His occupation is listed among census records as a general labourer and he is listed as crew on the ship Rockcliffe (and previously on the Worsley Hall) as a fireman and trimmer. Naval war medal award rolls state his medals from serving in the Merchant Navy (I think, my knowledge of this area is very vague!) were sent to his widow in 1919. His death is listed as Sept 1818. I desperately would like to know about his parentage, also whether he died at sea, in the war or otherwise, as this is something my father 'heard'. My Father also was of the thought that his Father may have been named Benjamin also. I have really hit a wall on this one so any enlightenment/suggestions would be warmly welcomed in NZ!

Birth year 1872
Age 46
Death quarter 3
Death year 1918
District South Shields
County Durham
Volume 10A
Page 1010

This is the GRO death registration
(Edited sorry pressed the submit button when I hadn't finished!)

If he had died overseas or at sea then I would have expected his death to have been registered under British Nationals died Overseas or Deaths at Sea.

I have looked at Durham Records Online but I cannot find any records for Benjamin.

His school record lists his Father as Johnbut I cannot find the1881census which would hopefully verify this.

I am sorry I don't have time to search further but hopefully someone else will pick up the thread and run with it

Royal Naval Reserve Ratings' Records of Service
Waine, Benjanin
Place of Birth: Cansay, Durham
Number: TS 3768
Date of Birth: 22 May 1872
TNA Reference: BT 377/7/113691

"This record is available to view with our image viewer"
It's the intentionally distorted images they mean (you can download the record for a few pounds)
We can glimpse some of the details of father and mother.
Mother is definitely Sarah. Father may be William.

There was a William and Sarah Waine family in Cornsay in 1871. Birth registrations of children suggest that Sarah's maiden name was Hall.
However in 1861 they had a son Benjamin, 8. What happened to him?
William Waine seems to have a variety of occupations on the census, but where were they all in 1881?

The school record says that Benjamin's father John was a Missionary.
It looks like you will need that birth certificate!

Wow thank you all so much! I'm truly grateful for any info shared as Benjamin and his parents have been quite the mystery for some years.
With your help I think I'll actually get somewhere. Yes the missing 1881 census is a monumental frustration!....??..
However, I'll follow up your leads straight away, particularly on John, which is a name I had not come across. William and Sarah I had, but the missing 1881 census threw me off and am at a loss of how to proceed.
Thanks again,I look forward to anything else anyone may find/ suggest
Why didn't I ask for help before??

I couldn't find Benjamin John or William in the correct scenario on the 1881 census. There is a Waine Family in Cornsay in 1881 headed by Thomas and Sarah

As Ian says your next move should be to purchase Benjamin's birth cert to confirm parents.
