Alice Dewbury of Waddesdon, Bucks

Postby sdup26 » Mon Jan 08, 2018 6:35 pm

I briefly mentioned this old family 'mystery' in a past post which related to another person. I've never been able to nail it down for certain, but am re-visiting it, and I'd be grateful if forum members could advise.

Alice Dewbury was born in Waddesdon, Bucks, c 1826, to John and Sarah (nee Terry/Tarry), and orphaned in infancy. She's on the 1841 census for Waddesdon as a female servant in the Dennis household, after which I can't find her.

In 1856, Agnes Grant was born in Manchester to Hugh and Sarah Grant. According to censuses, Sarah was born in 'Wasdon' Bucks, c 1825. On Agnes's birth certificate, mother is Sarah Grant nee Dupree, but Agnes's baptism record names her mother as Alice Grant nee Dewbury. Of all the names in all the world! (Baptisms/birth certs of subsequent Grant children show their mother as Sarah.)

Based on the above, which I admit isn't much, how safe would I be in assumuing that Alice and Sarah are the same person?

1861 birth of daughter Sarah has MMN of DUPREY So I’m picking it was pronounced as we do now, ie with an acute E.
1859 Mary Ann. MMN DUPREE
1863. Francis MMN DUPREY again

1861 (edited to correct year, sorry) census. Doesn’t say Waddesdon or similar, it looks more like Luton??! But does say Bucks,

I doubt it is Luton as that is in Bedfordshire. Could it be Launton, which is about 3-4 miles west of Waddesdon, just outside Bicester.

I agree, not Launton either. What is census reference, it’s sometime better to see whole image, to compare letter shapes across the page.

Very many thanks for all the replies. Yes, on Altrincham censuses, Sarah Grant says she was born 'Bucks, Luton' in 1861, and 'Bucks, Wasdon' in 1871. Assuming that Bucks is her correct birth county, Bucks FHS suggested that 'Luton' could actually be Loughton, which is about 14 miles from Waddesdon.

On family baptism/BMD certs, her surname is spelled as Dewbury, Dewberry, Dubrey, Duprey, or Dupree, possibly being heard in various ways because of her accent, said to be strong.

Loughton is a doubtful choice, as locally, the ‘Lough’ part is generally spoken to rhyme with ‘bough’ as in tree, so doubt it could be misheard as Luton. Unfortunately, despite having lived in the area in the past, I don’t know how they pronounce Launton, but to me this seems the most obvious choice, and it is a lot closer to Waddesdon, and it is in Bucks, unlike Luton which is in Beds!

Launton is along the current day A41 - an historical road and association is more likely than Loughton with is 20 miles cross-country to another county with probably no historical connection with Waddesdon.

So my money is on Launton. Perhaps you can check baptismal records and generally see how prolific the "Grant" name is in the two options
