Ann Symons - help with research

Postby Urchin » Thu Jan 04, 2018 5:33 pm

Hello everyone,
I am trying to find out some information on my 4x Great Grandmother, Ann Symons.

Here is what I know:
According to the 1851 Census, she lived in Appledore, Devon, but was born in Somerset (Bristol)
She married John Cole
She was born around 1818
Her daughter, Mary Ann Symons Cole was born 1853 in Appledore, Devon.

I think her father's name was John Symons/Symmons.

I have no idea who her parents were, when she died, etc. My researching skills are failing me. Can anyone offer possible additional details? I can't seem to locate her after this.

There is this list of marriages that would be worth checking.

Edit for baptisms,

George, Charles and Mary Ann all baptised - see Devon Baptisms FMP with f. John. m. Ann, mariner
Eliza looks to be baptised Elizabeth, John is down as John Butt Cole. Mariner
There is also a William John baptised feb 29 1856. S of John and Ann, but that John is a Pilot. Might he have changed occupations? I cannot see William John in the GRO index

Is this Ann in 1871. None of her children with her

In 1861 Charles Cole is with his aunt Mary Ann Symons, unmarried, age 50 dressmaker, born Bristol (not plaxtol as indexed, it is perfectly clear on image).
In 1851 Mary Ann is in Appledore with her Aunt Elizabeth SIMMONDS a land owner born North Shields
Also with them is 18 yr old Charles SIMMONDS a mariner. Nephew of Eliz, so presume brother of Mary Ann
In 1841 Mary and Charles are with parents (I assume) William Symons b Devon, 68, Mariner & Elizabeth 53 born out of county (Ireland???). Says Charles born out of county, but thereafter , including his seaman’s record, it says he was born appledore/Northam, Devon, In 1832

William Symons age 73 buried Appledore Feb 1846. Fits with 1841 census.
I suppose Mary Ann and Charles in 1841 Could be niece and nephew of William and Elizabeth, and then that Elizabeth is the Aunt they are with in 1851? She’s a land owner, so there might be a will. I think she died 1857

It's all so confusing, trying to sort out all the family members when it seems they all were shuffled around households.

As far as I can find, the parents of Mary Ann and Charles are Ann Symons and John Cole. So it sounds like William Symons is Ann Symons' brother?

Don’t forget there are two generations of Mary Ann and Charles.

I think you have William and Elizabeth Symons. Who are either the parents or the uncle and aunt of

Mary Ann Symons b Bristol abt 1811
Ann Symons b Bristol abt 1818
Charles Symons b either Bristol or Appledore 1832

Then Ann Married John Cole. (If you buy that marriage cert you will know if William is her father or not]. And she had the children I listed earlier which include Mary Ann Cole b 1853, and Charles Cole b 1850

I haven’t found a death for Ann yet.
I wondered about the John Budd Cole death in 1857. Which matches the John Butt father at baptism of Eliza, and also matches Ann being a widow in 1861, but even though we have Eliza with her mother in 1861 I’m a little bit concerned he wasn’t John Butt or Budd Cole for the other baptisms as when you look through the register it seems to be a common way of distinguishing all those common names.

I’d be glad to know the result of the marriage cert when you get it.

Thank-you for clearing that up! I ordered the marriage certificate, so hopefully that will clear things up further. I'm in Canada, so it will likely be a few weeks before it gets here, but I will try to remember to come back and update you :) You've been a huge help!
