Royal York Rangers

Postby neergydna » Mon Dec 25, 2017 11:40 am

My 2x great-grandfather, Stephen Roberts, was enrolled into the Royal York Rangers (RYR) in about 1809 and served in the West Indies being demobbed in 1819 when he became a Chelsea Pensioner, dying in 1840. I have found out that the RYR was a "naughty boy regiment". Having found details of his time as a Chelsea Pensioner, I would like to find out why he was enrolled into the RYR? Where can I find his service record or records of the RYR?

Try "England & Wales, Criminal Registers, 1791-1892" on Ancestry

Where can I find his service record or records of the RYR?

Service record is on Findmypast. It's also catalogued at the National Archives thus...

Presumably that's your man. You didn't provide much in the way of identification details.

Pay and muster records are at the National Archives

This transcription is incorrect, Crambooth does not exist and is Cranbrook as stated on The National Archives catalogue.

This is the record that is on Findmypast as already discussed and referenced by the National Archives catalogue.

Findmypast is available free of charge via many British library services.

People should note that many of Ancestry's military records are on their Fold3 site, needing a 2nd subscription. However, many of those Fold3 images are already on FindMyPast or are accessible as paid for downloads from the TNA Discovery site. In fact, if you sort through my posts, I have a suspicion that I found that some of those Fold3 images are available for free from the TNA Discovery site as what are termed Digital Microfilm. However, in that case, you have to spend some time downloading a big chunk of data and then searching through manually for your target.

Should you already possess a Fold3 subscription, you won't care, but I suspect few Brits will have such a subscription.

Thank you to all who replied. I will have to look at the muster rolls at the National Archives to see if they give me any further information.
