Can you read Charles' surname?

Postby pforkes » Sun Dec 24, 2017 7:07 pm

Charles married Susannah Pearson, but I cannot read his surname. This is from the 1891 census. I have found him on th e1881 census and his name is just as illegible!

Looks like Boffin but more likely to be BUffin, as in 1901 census.

I have seen that there are two Pearson brothers in law in the household in 1891 but the only marriage I can find is for Charles Buffin with Susannah Spath in Dec Q 1890 in Barnsley, (transcribed as Spath on Ancestry but Spate on FMP). This name may be worth investigating further as, in view of their ages, one or both could have been married before.

A quick trawl through FamilySearch reveals the following:

Census (all in same/similar place in W.Yorks):
1881, 1891 Boffin
1901, 1911 Buffin

1881 single, 1891, 1901 with wife Susannah, 1911 widower

1901, 1911 has birth 1855 Berry Hill, Glos

There is a Charles Buffin born 1854 in English Bicknor, very near Berry Hill (Forest of Dean) - parents Charles and Marianne. But 1861 and 1871 Censuses show him with parents Joseph and Mary Anne (which is probably another story).

Can't see a likely marriage for Susannah Pearson, born 1853ish in Dudley/Staffordshire.

It seems that Susannah Pearson married a Samuel Spate in Q3 1872 in Barnsley.

Presumable, Samuel died (though I have not found his death) and then Susannah Spate married Charles Buffin on 17th December, 1890 in Hoyland, Yorkshire.

It appears that she the died in Q3 1909 in Barnsley.

There is more to dig out here...
