Is this a military uniform?

Postby SarahTrinity » Fri Dec 22, 2017 5:28 pm

Hi,
This photo is of Adam Frew 1853-1919. Can anyone help with the uniform? Adam was born in Scotland and he emigrated to Pennsylvania USA where he died.
He looks too old to be a soldier! He was a miner when he emigrated.
His belt buckle looks as if it might have a Maltese cross on it.
Any help would be appreciated.

I would have thought it was more likely to be a Masonic Lodge or Fraternal organisation of some sort.
I looked for images of the Knights of Malta, but it doesn’t look like them,

A friend has just had a look at the photo and has suggested that as he originated from Scotland,
it could be an orange order outfit.

How about St Johns Ambulance brigade? They use the Maltese Cross as an emblem

I think it could be the Masonic Knights Templar. There is a history of the Knights Templar in Pennsylvania 1797-1919 which might help: https://archive.org/details/historyofknigh00crei

I searched the text for Frew and couldn't find him mentioned personally but there may be details there that help.

I couldn't find any photographs when I looked online that quite matched yours, but there were certainly some similar ones.

Many thanks to all. I think that the Pennsylvania Lodge is correct.
