Can you read the name of the bride's father?

Postby pforkes » Tue Dec 12, 2017 8:14 pm

To me, the bride’s father’s name looks like “Ramah Robinson Chason” but as of yet I have not found any references to him.

What do you think that his name is?

What a wonderful name! Certainly looks like that to me.
CHASON itself is a rather unusual name. There is a family in Suffolk in the 1871 census which probably needs to be considered as related:
Name: Robt Chason
Age: 31
Estimated birth year: abt 1840
Relation: Head
Spouse's Name: Mary Chason
Gender: Male
Where born: Friston, Suffolk, England
Civil Parish: Knodishall
others:
Mary Chason 29
William H Chason 8
Eliza Chason 6
Fredrick Chason 5
Elizabeth A Chason 2
Emma Chason 2 Months

There is a Robert Chason marrying in Swaffham (Norfolk) in 1855 to Elizabeth, and previously a marriage of a RObert in 1851 also Norfolk. So , in general there is a smattering of the name in Suffolk and Norfolk - but incidence is scant and I haven't yet found a birth for your Helen Elisa.

On the 1891 census Alfred and Hellen Garwood are in Horringer, Thingoe and she is recorded as having been born in ? Sporle, Norfolk about 1862 but still can't find a birth reg for her.

Am now trawling through the 1861 census images on Ancestry for Sporle with Palgrave. Have found this family:
Mary CHEASON, head, wid, 44, b. Ingoldisthorpe
James Cheason, son, 21, gardener, b. Sporle
Robert Cheason, son, 16
Susan Cheason, dau, 13
William Cheason, son, 11

There are more CHEASONs on the next page
James Cheason, 39, ag lab
Susan Cheason, 43, wife

Robert Cheason, lodger, visitor, gardener
See: RG9/1263, fol.67
Could this be the birth of your Helen Elizabeth?
Births Jun 1862 CHEASON, Female Swaffham 4b 381

My guess for her birth is Eliza Cheason, 1863 Oct-Dec The Swaffham Union 04b 385, but even if I get this certificate I am not sure that there would be enough information on it to prove it.

Ramah is to be found in several books of the Old Testament. It is a place - a city of Benjamin now called el-Ram. Not that it will help you much but I like to find the origins of unusual names. I have a wonderfully useful Bible Reader's Encyclopaedia and Concordance which I consult for situations such as this. I couldn't find a similar name that might have been the intended one but had been mis-spelled if they weren't sure of the correct spelling.
I've also had a rummage around on several sites for Ramah and Helen but have had little success other than agreeing with Sylcec about the surname being found in Norfolk and Suffolk.

Could be worth looking for Mary Cheason in Sporle in the 1871 census.
Back in 1851 she is married to John, and they have a daughter Sarah (9).
