Roland Sidney Cornwall Nash b 1890

Postby jeanp » Mon Dec 04, 2017 2:15 pm

In the 1891 census Sidney Cornwall age 1, born Holloway was listed as a 'visitor' with Charles Nash and Susan Nash in Enfield, Middlesex. In the 1901 census, Charles and Susan Nash listed a 'son' Sydney Nash age 11, born Holloway. In 1911 this 'son' was listed as Roland Sidney Nash age 21 (b Holloway). (Also there was a visitor called Ethel May Crabbe.). On 26 July 1913 Roland Sidney Cornwall Nash married Ethel May Crabbe (and he gave Charles Nash as his father). In 1939 they are in Cardiff, listed as Roland Sidney Cornwall Nash born 31 March 1890 and Ethel May Cornwall Nash. This DOB matches the Death registration for Roland Sidney Cornwall Nash in Lancashire in 1978. It seems to me that Sidney Cornwall, Sidney Nash and Roland Sidney Nash are the same person. Charles and Susan do not consider him to be their son in 1891, so the question is, who are his parents? I can't find a Birth Registration for Roland Sidney Nash for 1890 (though there was one born in 1895), but there is one for Roland Sidney Cornwall (2nd quarter 1890 which would be Correct if he was born 31 March.) I wonder if anyone has seen his Birth Certificate which would show his birth parents, or at least his birth mother.

Hello
The new Gro index gives his mother as formerly a Miss Danby.
This would match with a marriage Dec 1883 Hampstead 1a 1245
Alfred Sidney Cornwall and Jane Sharp Danby
He was a 27 year old accountant 20 Goldhurst Road s of Arthur Walter dec
She was 22 91 Sutherland Avenue d of John dec farmer
wit Charles Edwin and Anne Louisa Cornwall and Harriet Danby.
At St Mary Kilburn 4 Oct.

Alfred Sydney is in 1901 in the City Asylum and he dies Mar 1909.
He had been indicted for murder and convicted of manslaughter 8.4.1889 and got 10 years.
It would be a push for Roland to be his son if he was born 31.3.1890.
Jane has gone back to live with her mother Sarah in 1891 at Sutherland Avenue.

But that's the only Danby/Cornwall marriage I can see.And he's the only child Cornwall/Danby.

ps Alfred shot his brother in law James Danby at the Rose and Crown Public House 25 Feb 1889.

Baptism record gives that date too.
In the register of St Andrew Enfield
but noted St Michael's
29 June 1890
(born) March 31
Roland Sydney
parents Alfred Sydney + Jane Sharp Cornwall
abode Chase Side
father an Accountant

Convicted of manslaughter 8.4.1889. Does this necessarily mean that he went straight to jail.

He may not have been a threat to society and allowed bail while the courts waited for an assessment of his mental capacity - he did end up in an asylum, rather than jail!

I haven't looked at the records to see if this is really a possibility - you might be able to find the date he entered the asylum.

If he was on bail until July fatherhood might be possible.

In 1911 she is a widow in Paddington. Describes herself as a Boarding House Keeper.
For what it's worth, she has answered the question "children born alive to present marriage" with None.

Alfred Sidney Cornwall was in Chatham Prison in 1891, it appears that he had been previously been in Wormwood Scrubs.
He was certified insane 15 April 1891, and transferred a couple of days later to the Broadmoor Criminal Lunatic Asylum.
And transferred from there to the City of London Lunatic Asylum at Stone, near Dartford, in 1897.

Likely death in Epsom, where there was a whole cluster of asylums, in March qtr 1909, age 52.

Thanks for these replies to my post re Roland Sidney Cornwall Nash. If the 'visitor' of 1891 and the 'son' of 1901/11 are the same, I'm now left wondering what connection he had to Charles and Susan; a connection that was strong enough that they 'adopted' him. I haven't come across the names Cornwall or Danby in my Nash (actually Naish not Nash) family, so perhaps there's a connection in Susan's family.
Thanks for your help.
