Elizabeth Wootten HARPER

Postby JMcK » Sat Dec 02, 2017 12:14 am

I have been contacted by a man writing a history of a school of which Sidney Francis FURRIAN was an early headmaster in the late 1860s Looking for a photograph of him.

Sidney died 1903 and his wife Elizabeth Wootten née HARPER in 1919 so it seems reasonable there might be a photograph out there. ( the school & Masonic q records have none and nor do this side of the family so I thought I would see if I can trace siblings of Elizabeth. (They had only one child who died in childhood).

Elizabeth Wootten Harper Was married to Sidney Francis FURRIAN Southwark 1844
From 1851 census dob 1822 Brighton
Gives Brighton address of 15 Bond Street, Brighton at marriage. Father William Harper, victualler

In 1841 a William is in Brighton Place, does that say Beer Shop? Wife Sarah and daughter Ellen

There is a baptism for An Elizabeth Wootten Harper in 1842 at Hamsey Sussex. Is this her? I can’t find the image anywhere. Why so late, or is it an error in transcription?

William and Sarah in 1841 both born out of county. Ellen 14 b in county.
Where is Elizabeth Wootten in 1841?
Sidney is in Brighton, an assistant teacher at the school run by Mr Guest. Indexed on Ancestry as Fanrien.

There are other Wootten Harpers in Wiltshire, in the 1780s 1790s. THey seem to belong to the couple Robert Harper and Mary Wootten. Is William their son baptised 1787 Calne, Wiltshire?.

In 1851 there is a Sarah Harper with daughter Ellen both the right age and Sarah born Wiltshire which we might expect but she says she is unmarried rather than widowed.
Similarly in 1861, (Ellen is Helenor) 1871

It looks as though Sarah did not marry. Can anyone see any other family?

Update.
I think Sarah with William in 1841 is his unmarried sister (b 15 July 1799 Calne, Wilts) and Ellen is her illegitimate daughter.

But now I have found William Harper b 1787 in Calne an Ag Lab, widower, in 1851....
and in 1841 is in Calne too with wife? prudence age 52.

So who is the one in Brighton in 1841? I thought I was making great progress but I think it’s back to the drawing board.

Hi Jo
It says she was an adult. Doesn't name parents though.
You can see the image on FamilySearch, but you need to be logged in for this one

Hi again
There's a baptism at St Peter Brighton, 6 June 1845
Robert
Son of William + Caroline Harper
abode Bond St
father a Publican
born March 15 1824

FamilySearch also have indexed Sarah Robinson Harper in Brighton to William and Caroline in 1817.
EDIT - That's from Dr Williams Library, London. Is on ancestry - also William Robinson Harper and John Vine Harper.

Is there a secret trick to getting to that? I can do it from your link fine, (thank you) but I had already tried a general logged in search on Fam Search and not one of the three possible results has an image.

Oh I’ve just managed it. Look at the film number, search for the film, scroll through. Thank you very much for doing that for me.

William Robinson Harper. 1/8/1815
Sarah Robinson Harper. 23/3/1817
John Vine Harper 31/12/1818

Were all baptised on the same day 13th May 1824. (And Caroline buried 14 Oct 1824) If Elizabeth Wootten was born 1822 why would she not have been included in this bulk baptism? Or Robert for that matter, born 15 Mar 1824.

they are non conformist baptisms...did the child have to be over 5?

Caroline is of Poplar Street at her death which matches res of Mary Wootten Harpers death.
