Jane Dougharty born c1802

Postby katebenn » Mon Nov 20, 2017 8:12 am

I'm trying to track down the birth of Jane Dougharty/Dougherty c1802 possibly from Scotland.
She married William Banton c1820 in Ticknall, Derbyshire BUT I can't find details of the marriage - the marriage could have been in Woolwich, Kent as William was a soldier at the time.
Their first 3 daughters were born in Woolwich - Mary 1821 but I've not found a baptism for her; Elizabeth & Fanny I have their baps at Woolwich.
I have William's service papers.
Any help or ideas gratefully received.
Kate

Hi Kate - there are two British Army Service Records on Find My Past. I've run out of FMP credits (again) or else I would check for you. You could always buy some credits (£6.95), or perhaps one of the forum members with a FMP sub could check for you.

Hopefully the records below can provide answers to your queries:

Banton, William - Ticknall, Derbyshire (nor birth, death, or event dates)
Banton, William - Ticknall, Derbyshire (birth 1796, event 1813)

Hi,
Yes I knew attestation for William 21 Jan 1813 in 7th Btn Artillery Gunner & driver. I have his papers - it just his marriage details that I don't have.
Thanks for your help though

According to the 1841 census, Jane is listed as born in Ireland. Have you checked for a birth in Ireland circa 1802?

Mo,
I have thought of Ireland.
Ancestry 1841 census gives Scotland for her birth.
Now I have the Irish Genealogy site details I will investigate further.

Kate - Jane's birthplace is notated as Ireland on the Familysearch.org 1841 census transcription. Having looked at the image, it looks like an "I" to me.

Do William's service records indicate he was stationed in Ireland circa 1820? Also, could daughter Mary have been born in Ireland (and not Woolwich)?

Hi Mo,
I had wondered if it could have been 'I' for Ireland & wrongly transcribed - her name is more likely to be Irish than Scotish.
Will need to search Irish records for Jane's bap & look in 1821 for a Mary also. There is a 5 year gap before the next child who is baptised in Woolwich - so you may well be right.
Service record gives Gibralter for 7 years & the rest 'at home' but no dates.
Thanks for the thoughts - it helps to think along with someone else!
Will let you know what I find.

Hi,
Very many thanks for this - I knew William did serve in Gibraltar for 7 years 6 months but didn't have any dates.
I have Elizabeth & Fanny at Woolwich but not Jane's birth. The girls always gave their birth places as Ticknall, Derbyshire, I guess they wouldn't remember their time in Gib or Newcastle.
The family returned to Ticknall in 1837 when William left the army. Son George was baptised there in Aug 1837.
You don't know the marriage details for William & Jane by any chance - could this have been in Gibraltar?
Thanks again for your help,
Kate

Hi
I've had a pretty good look, but I'm afraid I can't see any sign of the marriage.
There were some Dougherty marriages in Woolwich around the time, but no Jane.
It's puzzling, but not really unusual, sadly we don't find them all.

Image of the BT of Jane's baptism in 1831 is here
