The Lovegroves of Reading

Postby Grandy » Sun Nov 19, 2017 10:55 pm

We've been trying to trace my wife's grandfather but all we know is that his name was John Lovegrove, he was born around 1893/4 and that his fathers name was Thomas.

He married my wife’s grandmother, Mildred Doris Goodey, in August 1920 and on the marriage certificate describes himself as a Painter Journeyman. His father is described on the same certificate as a Painter and Decorator and is listed as deceased. When they married, both JL & MDG were living at 89 Cholmeley Road, Reading (the home of MDGs Grandmother, Hephzibah Goodey (nee Fisher)).

We think the marriage may have been annulled somewhen before 1924 when she remarried. The family rumour is that JL was MDGs uncle (her mothers brother) but this doesn't tie in with what we know of that side of the family.

JL was noted as a Master House Decorator on my wife's fathers birth certificate (28/02/1922). We have contacted the Painters and Decorators Association as they are the official guild but have had no reply.

JL & MDG had 3 children before they separated in about 1923/4, Mildred Doris Beryl (12/1920), Thomas Peter John (28/02/1922 - my wife's father) and Daphne Jean (31/01/1924).

In 1922, when TPJ was born, MDG was living at 84 Carnarvon Road, Reading BUT JL was living at 32 Sycamore Street, Reading (?????).

In 1923, JL was still living at 32 Sycamore Street and he shared the house with a Timothy Cooper.

In 1924, MDG marries Tim Cooper (they are both now living in Park Road, Farnham) and JL disappears from my radar!

I have tried working backwards (and from every other conceivable angle) but can't seem to find JL anywhere. I have even tried looking through WW1 records as JL must have served but can only find details for 3 possible candidates:

Private 7439 John Lovegrove, Royal Berkshire Regiment
Private 7947 John Lovegrove, Hampshire Regiment
Private 29568 John C Lovegrove, Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry

Unfortunately, none of these JLs have any concrete links to our JL.

Can anyone out there help us to break down this brick wall? :?:

Have you considered the marriage 26 Dec 1925. Of John Lovegrove 28 decorator father Thomas deceased Decorator to Dorothy Brentall 22. Indexed on Ancestry as Porentnall

Is it worth seeing if you can follow him back or forward? I know the age is out, but given her age of 22 ..
Or he may have been lying at the first marriage. ...

You may seen these already -

There is a 1901 census for a John Lovegrove age 7, son of Frank Lovegrove (House painter) and Sarah in St Ebbe Oxford and there is a death of a JL in Abingdon in Sep Qtr 1974, with a DOB 27 Apr 1893.

So 1901 census and the last post have references to other Lovegroves who were decorators - seems it may well have been one of those jobs that pass around the extended family. My family were shoemakers and dispersed around the same area as your Lovegroves- I assume this was so that they did not compete with each other. One of my extended family married a Lovegrove in 1861 in Hartley Wintney (which is between Reading and Farnham)- but I can see no quick link to your family.

We can take this one forward to 1939
Heath Road, Twickenham M.B.
John Lovegrove, born 3 July 91, Married, Painter & Decorator
closed record
Rita D Lovegrove (later Blake), 4 Nov 28, Single, At School (from transcript, it's dittoed from entry above)

Birth, Dec 1928 Brentford 3a 196
Lovegrove, Rita D.
mother Brentnall

Dorothy is at 80 St Albans Avenue, Acton M.B.
Dorothy M Lovegrove (later Lange), born 15 Aug 03, Married, Factory Hand Packer

Looks like that change to Lange may have been noted 2.8.46
Dorothy May Brentnall, bap 4 Nov 1903, Mortlake, born 15 Aug 03. Parents Thomas Henry + Caroline.

Now this may be interesting.
In 1911 there's a John Lovegrove, 22, born Reading, Berks, a private in 2/Hampshire Regiment
Somewhere in Africa.

There's a Militia Record in WO 96 for
John Lovegrove, no. 19051, 3rd Hants Regt.
born Earley near Reading, Berks
attested 12 October 1907
age 19 years 3 months
Single
trade or calling - Painter

Record only to 30 November 1907, then To Hants Regt.
So that looks like him in 1911.

Says, next of kin
(Father) Thomas Lovegrove
38 Grange Abbey
Wokingham Road
Reading

Probably not the 1891 3rd qtr registration of John, Solihull, mother Parsons. That couple are John Lovegrove and Ellen Parsons and he is a Waggoner on a farm in 1901 and 1911. As is John junior 1911

So perhaps the birthdate given in 1939 is also imaginative.

There's a Grange Avenue in Reading, maybe that is what they meant by Grange Abbey.
At number 38 in 1911, a large household
Thomas Lovegrove Head 57 Married Painter House, born Reading Berks
Margrate Lovegrove Wife 54, married 35 years, children 18-15-3 (wow!), Reading Berks
Then 8 sons, 1 daughter, 1 grandchild.

Go back to 1901 in Reading St Giles
piece 1152 folio 86 page 5
Same address, 38 Grange Avenue
Thomas Lovegrove, Decorator
wife Margaret
12 children

There is no son John!
Looking at the others, from the GRO indexes it looks like Margaret's maiden name was Dixon.

Could the answer be that John was actually Francis George?

Birth, Sep 1889 Reading 2c 372
Lovegrove, Francis George
mother Dixon

Not with family in 1911
September quarter would be right for that birth date given in 1939, 3rd July
The army record for John suggests a birth in June or July.
The years are all different. But I find it hard to believe that there were two or three John Lovegrove's, all painters, all with a father Thomas, and who all prove so difficult to trace. It seems likely that it was one man who, as Jo said, was imaginative when it came to giving his age.
Why Earley though? It says John was residing there when he joined the militia, but also that he was born there.

Death
Dec 1964 Camberwell 5C 290
Lovergrove, Francis G.
age 75

There is a Francis G Lovegrove on some early 1960s south London electoral registers, at the same address as Clyde and Rita Blake.
Marriage
Dec 1953 Stepney 5d 1060
Blake, Clyde D.
Lovegrove, Rita D.
