William George Hibbard

Postby katebenn » Sat Nov 18, 2017 4:38 pm

I'm trying to find the service history for William George Hibbard b 1872 in Bray, Berks.
In 1890 aged 18 he joined the Oxfordshire Light Infantry & on the 1891 he was at New Barracks, Alverstoke, Hamps.
Around 1896 he married Annie Beckley - can't find this - it may have been in Dublin
Their 1st child was born in 1897 - Kathleen Hibbard in Dublin; then Edith in 1898 in Gloucs. Her baptism gives father's occupation as gate keeper on the Midland Railway which I know he worked for in later life.
On 1901 census he is missing & Annie & 3 children are visiting a family called Voller in Cowley, Oxford.
I'm wondering if he had a short service in the army or could he have been a part time soldier or reservist if they had such things then??

Any ideas?
Kate

Hi Kate - on Find My Past there is a 4-page 1890 military record for a William Hibbard (b 1872) - location is Bray, Maidenhead, Berkshire, England. His pre-military occupation is stated as "groom". He was discharged on 05/08/1902 after having served 12 years.

That's him - I don't subscribe to Find my Past - only Ancestry.
Thanks for discharge date - this explains a lot inc where he was in 1901 - ie Army

Have now found William George in 1901; Lance Sgt at Oxford Cowley Military Barracks - wife Annie & 3 daughters 'visiting' in Barrack Road, Cowley.
After 7 years service he did 5 years in reserves as furlough, unpaid as a private; then rejoins in Apr 1902 as L -Sgt prior to his discharge.
