William Becroft

Postby katebenn » Fri Nov 17, 2017 9:13 am

I'm trying to find the birth details for William Becroft or Beecroft or Beacroft born c1820 in Ripon, Yorkshire.
I know he was a private in the 33 Foot Duke of Wellington's West Riding Regiment from 1842 to 1857. He stated his trade on enlisting was a groom. On his marriage to Mary Ann Jackson in 1861 he was a labourer & his father was John Beecroft, labourer; on 1871 census a pensioner & 1881 a colliery labourer & chelsea pensioner.
After Mary Ann's death he was an inmate at the Royal Hospital Chelsea where he died & is buried.
I can't locate him in the 1841 census prior to his enlistment or in 1861 just before his marriage in Newcastle upon Tyne; I assume he could have been abroad in 1871 with the army!
Any help would be most useful.

Hello
I think I've got his parents but it's a bit long winded so bear with me.
1841 census Ripon North St
John Beecroft 57 ag lab y
Thomas 31 bricklayer y
Elizabeth 18 y
John 16 shoe maker y
Mary Ann 13 y
Jane 10 y

Wife Margaret has just died Dec qtr 1840 Ripon age 52 vol 23 page 361

Thomas and john are baptised at Ripon cathedral 27.5.1820 and 4.8.1823 s of John and Margaret lab Ripon.
John junior marries at the cathedral Margaret Isherwwod 29.4.1844 describing his father as a farmer but sister Elizabeth 15.10.1848 gives him as a labourer on her marriage to William Luckley.

John and Margaret are married over at Birdsall 30 Jan 1813 to Margaret Baxter and it looks like their older children are baptised at Appleton le Street .
Robert 25.7.1815 and William 5.10.1817
.
It's understandable that William wouldn't remember Appleton by the time they moved to Ripon in 1820.
Father John gives his birthplace as Sawley nr Ripon on the 1851 and is baptised at Ripon Cathedral to George Beecroft 25th Nov 1787 of Sawley.

The World Army index gives William as being in Newcastle Jan -Mar 1851 and is at the Barracks on the 1851 census but like you I'm struggling to see him on the censuses.

ps Margaret Baxter baptised at Appleton le Street 16 Dec 1787 d of Thomas Baxter

Hi,
Thank you for this. I think you have William's parents. Although Appleton is some distance from Ripon it all matches up & William would think he was born in Ripon as the family are there for much of his child hood - however he always gives DoB as 1820 (not 1817)!

Does The World Army Index give the actual address of the barracks in Newcastle upon Tyne?

William Beecroft married in 1861 my maternal great grandfather's mother; she was base born as was he & 2 siblings, & there is no evidence that William Beecroft was the father.

His father John Beecroft looks to have died in 1853 in Ripon (on the marriage cert it does not mention 'deceased' but this is nothing unusual.

Hello
The 1851 census gives an address of St Andrews Barracks Newcastle upon tyne.It was alternatively known as Fenham Barracks at Leazoes Parade of Barrack St .
There is a picture of the Officers mess here.
www.britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101186 ... hAIJJLc4dU

It is now a listed building.

William is born 1820 on the 1851 census,1821 on the 1871 census ,1822 on the 1881 and 1819 on the 1891 census so his age does move around abit.
