Tracing possible Tassart family links

Postby Sue PAtchett » Fri Nov 10, 2017 1:19 pm

Elluce (Ellen) Desiree Tassart married William Patchitt in 1875 in Stretford, Manchester. She gave her fathers name as Mortimer Louis Tassart, occupation looks like Butler. On census returns they all state naturalised British subject for her but she may have been born in Boulogne. In 1886 Eliza Tassart, given as the widow of Mortimer Louis Tassart, also seems to say he was a Butler, died. The informant was her daughter E.D. Patchitt. Also in 1882 in Stretford William Louis Tassart aged 34 was found drowned in the Bridgewater canal and an inquest was held for which I have a record of the costs in the Quarter Sessions but I can find no record or report of the circumstances.
There are records on Family Search for a birth of a Mortimer Louis Tassart, father Louis, mother Eliza in Brighton Sussex in 1857 but I cannot find these through BMD or Parish Records.
My query is: can anyone help in finding any records for the father Mortimer Louis Tassart, birth, marriage, census or death?
Any birth records for Elluce Desiree and William Louis Tassart.
Any newspaper reports or inquest reports for the death of Williaim Louis Tassart that I may have missed.

Best I can do for dad in 1851! Seven census pages before Eliza.

Could be Eliza and Mortimer in Great Malvern in 1861. Ages 45 and 12. Eliza born Welland.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:M7FF-37K

Possible baptism of Eliza
Name: Eliza Bethall
Gender: Female
Christening Date: 24 Sep 1815
Christening Place: Welland, Worcester
Father's Name: John Bethall
Mother's Name: Elizabeth
England Births and Christenings, 1538-1975

So Mortimer Louis, born 1848, became William Louis by the time of his death in 1882?

So, with Eliza and her son lodging in Great Malvern in 1861, and with the census return reporting that she was still a married woman, where was her husband?

Oddly, there's a 40 year old Louis Tassart in Folkestone in 1861. Born France. Living with his wife, Charlotte, 30, who was born in Upton on Severn, Worcestershire (which is just down the road from Great Malvern), and son Frederick, 1, born Folkestone.
Birth registration in Elham district, June 1859, Frederick Louis Tassart, mother Webb.
Followed by Augustus Tassart, June 1861, again mother's maiden name Webb.

There was another Tassart family in Folkestone, headed up by Alfred.
Is this the same Louis? I don't know! He died in 1902, age 81.

You are an absolute star! Thank you so much for tracing this info for me and I'm pretty sure you have them identified.I had tried variations on names but not as scrambled as the ones you've found but having tried to decipher many census entries I'm not surprised.
I had traced the Tassart family from Folkestone and feel they are related somehow as whilst Tassart seems to be a fairly common name in France it is quite rare in England.
The William Louis Tassart I found was on the 1871 and 1881 census as a baker in Powick Worcestershire which is geographically very close to the Eliza Tassart, so again I feel they must be related especially as Elluce Desiree, Eliza and William Louis all ended up in Stretford Lancashire.
