How do I find a birth for 1804

Postby gill233 » Sun Nov 05, 2017 4:15 pm

I'm trying to find my great great grandparents who were living in Holywell lane in london in 1841. I can't find anything before that. Any ideas to help please.

How do I find a birth for 1804

I do not know how far you have explored to find answers but the following is what I would do in the circumstances. The 1841 census will give you roughly a 5 year age range for each person as the age for adults was rounded down. You should be able to see a mark under the column that relates to born in County or not. That will help you to either focus on the London area or let you know that they were from elsewhere. If there are any children of the marriage you should be able to ascertain a possible year of marriage for the couple. Then your best bet initially is to go to familysearch.org (a free site if you haven't used it before). Enter details in the appropriate boxes and see if anything comes up that might be your family. With little details to hand, it is a slow process of elimination, I'm afraid.

Thank you, I have done everything you suggest.
I think they were Jewish judging by their names - Levene and Levy but even JewishGen can't help.
I don't know where to go next. My grandmother was born in Great Yarmouth according to the 1841 and later census returns but I can't find anything in the Norfolk results.

There is a public Tree on Ancestry which gives a date of birth for Lewis of 26 July 1802 in London and a year of marriage of 1830 in Norwich toCaroline Levy, NEITHER of which are verified. However, it may be worth looking at the tree or even contacting the owner.

To match the birth from that public tree I found a baptism on Ancestry's London baptisms marriages and burials 1538-1812, at St Mary at Lambeth on 27 Sept 1805 for a John Lewis Lavena (but I think it is more likely Lavenn enlarging the original) son of John Baptist Harriet Lavena born 26 July 1802.

Given that there is a death in 1868 in Lambeth for a John Lavene born c.1803 it is doubtful if this is your Lewis. I think the tree owner has put 2+2 together and made 6!! - which sadly happens all too often and the lack of confirmation would suggest this. However if you haven't already done so it is worth checking if only to eliminate.

As far as further research goes it is possible that Lewis and Caroline gave their many children Family names so that may prove useful in trying to identify their parents. I think there is also a possibility that, given their suggested heritage, that they were born oversees.

Sorry not much help in the end.

The marriage is recorded in the Norwich Mercury, and in the Norfolk Chronicle, 11 July 1829
The Chronicle, page 2
Married
Wednesday last, at the Wheat Sheaf, Bethel-street, by the Priest of the Synagogue, Mr. Lewis Levin, jun. tailor and salesman, of this city, to Miss Caroline Levy, eldest daughter of Mr. Samuel Levy, of Great Yarmouth.

There's a Samuel Levy in Yarmouth in 1841, age 70

What a shame it doesn’t mention the name of Lewis’s Fathet

It does though say Lewis Levin jun
So hopefully his father was also called Lewis.
The marriage was actually in quite a few other papers as well, including the Bury Post.

In 1851 Lewis Levene, 44, Master Tailor, said he was born in Whitechapel.

Could be Ian. I must admit with the placement of the comma and full stop I read it as if he was a junior tailor and salesman rather than Lewis junior
