William Hilton B. Epsom, Surrey about 1770

Postby Sucher » Mon Oct 30, 2017 7:25 pm

William Hilton was born about 1770 in Epsom, Surrey. He married Frances Vale in Lambeth 22 July 1797, in the banns, he is described as a widower. As far as I can tell, he married Maria Penfold in 1792 although I cannot find evidence of her death between that year and the date of William’s second marriage.

I am trying to find William’s forebears without success, he is a direct ancestor so would appreciate any assistance from the experts here. Many thanks.

Hi
Not exactly assistance, I'm afraid!
William and Frances had a son William baptized in Epsom, 9 October 1796
Which is before they married in Lambeth, 22 July 1797

The two Williams might have died around the same time?
Sep qtr 1854
Wandsworth 1d 660
Hilton, William
age 58

Lambeth 1d 629
Hilton, William
age 88
Is this your man? If the age was accurate, it puts his birth around 1766 (he was 81 in 1851)
But I can't see a death for Frances!

Burial at West Norwood (South Metropolitan) Cemetery
24 Sep 1854
William Hilton, age 58
Has a Clapham address.

No joy with a baptism record for the older William. Best I've come up with is one in Southwark in 1768, whereas your William says he was born in Epsom.

Thank you once more Ian for your endeavours. Wm Hilton, 1796 - 1854 was my 2 x great grandfather and indeed lived in Clapham where my great grandfather was born in 1850. William was a Stage Coach driver and his death certificate states that he died after 3 months of diarrhoea, nasty way to go.

William Hilton senior is present on both the census of 1841 and that of 1851. On the latter, as you say, he gives his place of birth as Epsom.

The Surrey Records Office is quite close, maybe they have more information - will try to get there. The Hilton name has a large cluster in Lancashire, so perhaps the answer lies there?

Thanks again
