Henry Geering from Westham Sussex 1824 - 1887 approx

Postby watersidejim » Sun Oct 22, 2017 12:21 pm

Henry Geering was my 3X Great Grandfather
He appears to have led a varied life, how he spent his early and final years is unclear and this is where I would like some help.
What is certain is that he came from Westham in Sussex. According to census information he was born around 1824, but I cannot find any baptism record. His parents were almost definitely Aaron William Geering 1786-1863 a wheelwright and Emma Rippington 1784-1850. Westham was home to various Geering families. His parents are listed in the 1841 Census, but Henry is not with them. The Henry age 17 at Pevensey Lowery with a Henry age 38 is unlikely to be him.
Another certainty is marriage to Harriet Hunt on 13 March 1847 at St Nicholas Brighton. Named as a Blacksmith, father Aaron Geering Wheelwright.
The 1851 and 1861 censuses have Henry & Harriet in Birmingham with Henry born Westham 1824. In 1861 & 1871 he is noted as an Iron Bedstead Maker. Various trade directories and stories from my family support this activity.
Later in 1871 his wife Harriet commited suicide; On 6 Sept 1873 Henry married Charlotte Ferrier at Holy Trinity Bedford. Not clear why Henry was in Bedford, it is him as marrige cert names Henry's father as Aaron a wheelwright.
The 1881 census has Henry Geering retired manufacturer with wife Charlotte at Clarenden Road Houghan Dover Kent. Why move to Dover? In 1883 Charlotte Geering died at Hougham Dover. Death reported by a Charlotte Oliver, husband named as Henry Geering Booksellers Agent. Strange, maybe Charlotte Oliver invented this.
Where did Henry Geering end his days? Birmingham, Bedford, Dover, back to Sussex??? I cannot find a likely record. A Henry Geering age 63 died in 1888 at Stoke on Trent, but very unlikely to be our man.

Any comments, corrections, additions would be much appreciated

Do you have the certificate for the 1888 death in Stoke on Trent and have ruled it out as a result ?

Thanks ColinB. That Baptism will be him. Where did you find that record? The usual sources (Ancestry, Family Search) don't have it.

The Death Cert for the Henry Geering who died in Stoke on Trent in 1888 aged 65 notes he was a Potter's Traveller so unlikely to be our man. There are several Geerings listed in the SoT area censuses without any obvious link to "My" Geerings.

The Sussex Parish Burial Register has a Henry Geering age 69 buried at Danehill/Danewood on 26 Feb 1887, so birth would be about 1818. I have his death cert which says he was a carpenter, reported by Frederick Geering son. Again unlikely to be our man.

Staffordshire Burial Indexes
at Hartshill Cemetery (Stoke)
Grave Ref/No. 1491
Geering, died June qtr 1888
Geering, died March qtr 1889
Geering, died June qtr 1891
+ other name/s later

Which seem to correspond to these deaths registered in Stoke district
Henry Geering, age 65
Henry Geering, age 0
Sarah Geering, age 39

Henry's birth
March 1889 Stoke T. 6b 215
Geering, Henry
mother's maiden surname David

Those four records are the only entries for Geering on FreeBMD in Stoke on Trent registration district, 1837-1922, so it can't be that common a name in Stoke.

The birth may or may not lead to a marriage in Lambeth in Sep qtr 1888?
George Geering + Sarah David
(at St Stephen, South Lambeth)
George's father was Henry?

There's a George Geering, 40, in Stoke in 1891, widowed, Lithographic Artist. Born Sussex. Has a daughter Nelly, aged 9, perhaps -
March 1882 Stockton 10a 77
Geering, Nelly
mother David

If this is Sarah's husband in 1891, then she must have died in the previous few days. It's possible then that it's George's father, son, and wife in that grave.
Is this George Geering your Henry's son? (he did have a son George!)

This George says he was born in Pevensey
Which is right next to Westham
But the George, son of Henry from Westham, was born in Birmingham
June 1849 Birmingham 16 312
Geering, George
mother Hunt

We seem to see him in Birmingham in 1871, married to Ellen
He is aged 21, and a Lithographer

Marriage could be at St Mark, Birmingham, 28 September 1870
George Geering + Ellen Inchley
His father Henry

No further sign in the census of a George Geering born Birmingham, but in 1881 there is the first appearance of George Geering born Pevensey
Living in Stockton (where Nelly was born). Age 31, Artist. Wife Sarah, 30, who was from Glamorgan.

Are they the same George? Seems possible?

For anyone who is interested
Staffordshire Burial Indexes

Useful site, even if they have a somewhat odd way of doing it. Great fun matching up with the death indexes though!

Sorted!

Thank you very much for your contributions. ianbee's information is spot on and fills many gaps in my records. The Staffordshire Burial Information confirms that the Henry Geering who died in SoT in 1888 was indeed my man, despite my earlier doubts. He is in the same grave as Sarah the wife of his son George and Sarah's son Henry who was born and died in 1889.

The marriage in Lambeth in 1891 is that of Henry's son George to Sarah David. As you know George 1849 - 1928 was a flamboyant character who moved around a lot. I knew he was living with a Sarah David in 1881 but had not found any marriage record, Sarah died just before the 1891 Census.

Henry Geering had another son Henry born about 1843, a brother of George. This Henry married an Elizabeth Mary Cowney, he worked in a Wolverhampton Iron works from about 1880. He died on 1 June 1898 at the County Lunatic Asylum Stafford.

Also, for information, there was a George Geering Baptised on 6 Oct 1850 at Pevensey to a James & Jane Geering. He died two days later and does not appear to have any close links to the Geerings discussed in this forum

THanks again folks for your valuable contributions.
