Researching ancestors in Malta?

Postby pforkes » Fri Oct 20, 2017 4:13 pm

Victoria Marie Carmelia Hill was born in Malta, around 1906, if the 1911 census is correct (she is shown as being 4 years old on the 1911 census).

On 2nd April, 1911, she was living with her father’s step father (James Woodbine) and his father’s mother (Harriett Elizabeth Hill) in Ely, Cambridgeshire. Her brother (Thomas Harold Hill, born 5th September 1909 in Ely) was also living with her.

Her father (Albert Edward Hill - born in 1884 in Ely) was working as a police constable in Llandyfodwg, Glamorgan, Wales and his married status is shown as “Widowed” suggesting that her mother Concetta Zammitt had died sometime between the birth of her brother and the 1911 census.

I believe that her father enlisted with the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1901 and was (presumably) sent to Malta where he met her mother (Concetta Zammitt)

My tentative research into family records in Malta has turned up nothing and my questions are:

When are where was Victoria Marie Carmelia Hill born?
What happened to Victoria Marie Carmelia Hill after the 1911 census?
When and where was her mother born (Concetta is, I believe, an Italian name)?
When and where were Albert Edward Hill and Concetta Zammitt marry?
When and where did Concetta Hill (née Zammitt) die?

I believe that most of these answers lie in Malta.

Once again, a big THANK YOU!

I have ordered Connie Hill's death certificate (her husband was born in 1884, so age when she died being 27 suggests that she would have been born at bout the same as him).

I have also ordered Victoria's birth certificate. Hopefully, I have entered all of the information correctly for her.

Zammit is a fairly common surname in Malta. The people there are not Italian, but they are Catholic, which may help when looking for records.

Hi
Possibility for her later
Working backwards

Death, October 2003, Downham
Victoria Marie M. C. Cox
d-o-b 18 Sep 1906

Is she also indexed as Victoria M C Kelsell?

Probate record! A will (proved 15 June 2004, Ipswich)
Victoria Maria Margarita Carmelia Cox
died 10 October 2003

A marriage
March 1956 Downham 4b 1054
Cox, Frank J. - spouse Kelsell
Kelsell, Victoria M. M. C.- spouse Cox

How did we get to Kelsell?
All I can find is
Dec 1927 Wisbech 3b 1590
Hill, Marie
Kelsell, Thomas

But that might be helped by the index to the 1939 Register, which has
Victoria Marie Margaret Cox (Kelsell), born 18.9.1906, living in Ruislip-Northwood U.D., Middlesex (with a Thomas Kelsell, born 1902)

Good luck with the Connie death certificate. Though it is a bit speculative!

The child was registered with the regiment so there is a fighting chance that the marriage was as well. The GRO army marriage indexes (available online at FMP) are incomplete. Not being able to find the marriage in the index does not mean that GRO won't be able to find it.

I would advise you to request a marriage certificate from the overseas section of GRO giving as much information as you can. You won't be charged if they can't find it.

On second thoughts, you might be better off downloading Albert Edward Hill's service record from Findmypast. It includes the details of the marriage and two children.

You were spot on with Connie Hill's death being the death of Concetta Zammitt! her death record arrived as a PDF this morning (how I LOVE these PDFs) and her husband was Albert Edward Hill a police constable. Thank you!

Now I need to find the birth record for Albert Hill. He is listed as "step son" in the 1901 census. Every lead that I have so far (including the birth record for Albert Edward Hill, born on 17 May 1884 in Kings Lynn, with no father listed) has turned up naught.

But who was the mother?

Have you looked at the service record as I suggested?

The service record (together with checks in FreeBMD and the 1911 census) shows that Albert Edward Hill was born to Harriet Elizabeth Hill.

Harriet Elizabeth Hill married Richard Atkin in 1885.

In 1892, Harriet Elizabeth Atkin married James Woodbine.

In 1911 Victoria Marie Carmelia was living with the Woodbine family.
