Brick wall with Charles Worthington

Postby Chris Verrill » Fri Oct 20, 2017 1:19 pm

Can anyone help me further with completing my search for Charles Edward Worthington - Born approx. 1875 in West Bromwich to parents Charles and Caroline.

I've found him in:
1881 with rest of family lodging in West Bromwich
1891 living in Oldbury and working as a labourer
1901 in West Bromwich with apparent wife Jayne (transcribed incorrectly) and daughter May
1914-1920 - I appear to have a military record from WW1 which I have presumed correct?

Then comes the brick wall. Can't find him in 1911 or his wife or daughter. Can't find a marriage record or death record. They seem to have disappeared. Using Ancestry I have tried to search overseas and although nothing fits, I wouldn't have thought they would have left the country as there was so much poverty on this side of my family.

Can anyone help before I go mad please? I need a fresh pair of eyes on this one.

Thanks

I can't find a marriage for Charles and Jayne (transcribed as Jane on the 1901 census on findmypast.) May is another problem. The 1901 census says she's two years old, so born c1899. The only May Worthington birth I can find is in Leicestershire - May Worthington, JQ 1897, Hinckley, 7a 64, mother's maiden name Orton. So far, I've had no luck with emigration or travel records.
You say you have a military record from WW1 - does it give any clues, such as home address/next of kin?

Thanks for your attempts.

The military records I have found are only service medal and award rolls 1914-20. It shows that he was a Private in the North Staffs Regiment AOC and was awarded a Victory, Star and British Medal on 5.3.1915 but gives no other details. Another document shows that he was entitled to them so I presume this is when he collected them and this is dated 27.3.1919 and in the remarks column it says 'Reserve'. I don't really understand this? Again no other details. So from this I have presumed he survived the first war but have little else to go on.

As I mentioned, Charles Edward and his family have disappeared.

On Ancestry, there is a 1914-1918 Service Record for a Charles Edward Worthington, who was a fitter. Could he be the man you saw in the Service Medal and Award Rolls 1914-20 ??

Name: Charles Edward Worthington
Gender: Male
Birth Date: abt 1884
Enlistment Age: 30
Document Year: 1914
Residence Place: 33 Rowley Grove, Stafford
Regimental Number: 2623
Regiment Name: North Staffordshire (Prince of Wales's) Regiment
Number of Images: 11
Form Title: Territorial Force Attestation

Looks like this soldier transferred to the R.A.O. Corps. His wife's name was Ada. They had a son named Edward (born 27 March 1913).

Chris - you need to tell us the service number(s) of the guy that you found if you want help interpreting the stuff - otherwise we could be talking about a different chap.

Regiment Number for my Charles Edward Worthington :

Private: 033535 in RAOC

North Staffs Reg: 240514

If this helps at all?

(I don't think its the Leeds connection)

Thanks

On Ancestry, reg number 033535 (RAOC) refers to the afore-mentioned Charles Edward Worthington who was born in Yorkshire in 1884 (wife's name Ada). About 13 or 14 pages into his Service Record, his reg number is 240514. Sounds like he's not your man. Perhaps your Charles never served in the military?

Thanks everyone I have now concluded that I have the wrong military records and have deleted them from my Charles Edward Worthington. However I am still left with the problem of where was he in the 1911 census; marriage and death records and anything else relevant to his so called family - Jane and May!

I still can't find him on Ancestry any further - any more suggestions please? This is now really annoying me and my wrist hurts with constant scrolling through none existent records. I think I might have to give up on him as the invisible man.
