Alice MORSE

can anyone see a birth Alice MORSE, MURICE or MAURICE or MEURICE, or MORRIS or other variant in about 1867, Halifax Yorks.
and, her whereabouts in 1871.

Background

in the 1881 census, the daughters of Isaac and Susannah, Esther 19 and Fanny 16 are lodging in Cheshire. both giving their occupation as Actress. With them is 14 year old Alice MORSE born Halifax, Yorkshire. Also an Actress.

Now- in the divorce petition of Susannah MORSE an Alice Murice is named. And Isaac is supposed to have been with her from at least May 1865 to January 1869 so this covers the period for a child to be born. It seems a good working hypothesis to think that this hypothetical child is Alice MORSE in the 1881 census.

The relationship with Isaac is supposed to have started in Dover. There IS a "charming serio-comic vocalist" Miss Alice MAURICE in the newspapers in the late 1860s. The first mention is in 1867 in Portsmouth. She is supposed to be 'from the Principal London Concerts". Later she is touring the northern cities, Manchester, Birmingham etc. In May 1868 she is 'prevented through illness' from performing. The birth??? She appears until September 1868 and then seems to vanish until reemerging in 1872. I am wondering if she went to America, and that that is where she is in 1871. And perhaps Isaac went there too? He married Clara SMART in Liverpool Oct 1878

I have not managed to find Isaac MORSE (or George KIRK) in the same article as Alice MAURICE which would be a nice clincher I think

I attach a screen shot of Alice's name incase there is a different interpretation

The only birth with one of your surname variants from 1865-69 seems to be this one:
Alice Ann Morris SQ 1865 Halifax 9a 427. Mother's maiden name is Humphreys - does that fit?

Hi Sidduo, that is the only one I can see too, but she can be well accounted for in the censuses, plus her parents are George and Jane.

There are a couple of Alice’s NOT born in Halifax. I might have to investigate them.

You're right - sorry about that. Is it a bit odd that Isaac's surname was Morse, and the Alice he supposedly had an affair with had the surname Murice? It's a sort of 'upmarket' version of Morris; was it really her name, or a stage name statement? 'I'm with Isaac but no-one knows, and this is the closest I can get to having his name.' Or am I reading far too much into it? Probably! But I mention it in case Alice (snr) had a different surname, under which Alice (jnr) was registered, rather than Morris or variant.

I think it is very likely Murice was a stage name (there is an Alice Murice, a serio comic in the papers)
Also at Isaacs second divorce the other woman was named as Florrie Grey, but I am 99% sure she was actually Florence Cosgrove.

I have found an Alice Morse age 4 , but born London, a vision in the Carrow household in Taunton in 1871. Been trying to make that fit. No luck so far.
