I didn't pay much attention to the crossed out name, but -
Looking at the worldwide army index for 1861 and 1871, there is no Jabez Wood
Perhaps missing muster rolls? Except there are plenty of names in the 35th Foot
Putting in his number, 998, brings up
John Thompson, Private, 998, 35th Foot (Royal Sussex), stationed at Meerut, East Indies
John Thompson, Private, 998, 35th Foot (Royal Sussex), stationed at Newcastle

Let's hope he didn't marry as John Thompson!

The army record seems to say he was in Sunderland in 1870, the 35th were there in 1871 according to this ... 1250695769

Newcastle or Sunderland?
Whatever, if he was in an army barracks in England then really he should be in the census. But I can't see him/them. Perhaps the barracks wasn't enumerated, or the book has been lost? But a more thorough look would be a good idea.

I believe that some, at least, of the 35th are on the 1871, at reference "RG10; Piece: 5122; Folio: 80; Page: 5" - I traced this by looking for Bartholomew Doyle who is on the same page of the WO121 as Jabez Wood (FMP). It's described at Tynemouth Garrison - but I can't see Jabez Wood (or John Thompson).

I would agree, by the way, with the identification of John Thompson, number 998 of the 35th Foot, with Jabez. Everything matches - number, regiment and places. Incidentally, whatever name he went under, he joined the 24th Regiment of Foot for starters, spending Dec 1856 to Jan 1861 in that regiment.

The Muster Rolls (which drive the Army Index) indicate that he was John Thompson in the 35th in 1861 and 1871. At least, as far as that clerk went!

Well, I set out hoping to trace Jabez' marriage and instead you've uncovered an even bigger mystery of an alias!
I followed your lead and was able to find a John Thomson at the Tynemouth Garrison in 1871, but was disappointed to find he was born in Scotland and was unmarried. There seem to be numerous marriages in the Sunderland area around 1871-74 for a John Thom(p)som but I'm unsure how to filter out if any of them are Jabez using his alias.
Once again think you all for your help and helpful pointers. :D
