Alfred William Pollard, b. Ipswich 1869

Postby DianaCanada » Sat Oct 07, 2017 9:12 pm

Yesterday I posted a query about Emily Myra St. Osyth Pollard, the youngest of ten children of John Metcalfe Pollard and his wife Sarah Tomlin. The Pollards lived in Ipswich, although both John and Sarah had roots in Lancashire. I do have John's family back a few generations and know Sarah's parents.

I have traced all of Emily's siblings but one - Alfred William b. 28 Feb 1869 (birth announcement in paper), Ipswich, baptized 27 Mar, parents' address given as Lower Brook Street, Ipswich, Suffolk. Alfred was John and Sarah's seventh child.

Found him in the 1871 census at home with his parents, and in 1881, an Alfred Wm. Pollard is a pupil at the Albert Middle Class School in Framlingham, Suffolk. He is listed as age 12, b. Ipswich.

I cannot find Alfred after this point. I did find a marriage in Marylebone in 1897, where his father lived at the end of his life, great hopes but it turned out to be someone else (m. Mary Ann Skinner).

Google turned up a great many references to another Alfred William Pollard who was a Shakespearean scholar, but alas, poor Yorick, not my Alfred.

Cannot find him in BMDs, or later censuses. Stumped!

Any help appreciated.

On Find My Past, there is a British Army Service Record for an Alfred Pollard, born 1867. Event date is 1886 and the location is St Margarets, Ipswich, Suffolk.

Thank you, MoVidger. I will check that out. Two of his brothers enlisted, he might have done as well. The family did live in St Margaret's.

I looked through that Alfred's records but on the last page it gives his father as Frederick Richard Pollard, not John Metcalfe Pollard. Thank you for letting me know.

I think you've found him, Ian!
He and Martha are on the 1900 census in Henry Clay, Pennsylvania. Alfred listed as a coal miner, b. feb 1869, England.
An Ancestry member tree has Martha dying in 1902.
I can't find Alfred after that, but will keep looking.
Appreciate your help, thank you!

Interestingly, Martha's 1902 newspaper obit refers to her as "Martha Pollard Cunningham". She died (age 26) at the home of her parents of consumption. The obit states she is survived by her parents and her siblings (each of which are named), but there is no mention of Alfred William Pollard at all.

Obit appears under "Cunningham" in the Connellsville Courier, 25 July 1902 (4th column, near the bottom of the page).

Thank you, MoVidger. That is very odd, perhaps Alfred had left her. In the 1901 census they are together, and everything matches, age, maiden name, so I think it is the same person.
I have looked for Alfred on later US censuses, Canadian censuses, and looked back over the British BMDs in case he returned to England and died there. Could not find an Alfred that matched well, but of course, the age or lack of middle initial could throw that off.
Still hoping I can find out what happened to him, but am grateful for progress!
