Can you post some details of this burial? Or what it says on the gravestone.

Hi
He died on December 16 or 18th 1957 and was buried in same gravestone as his uncle Frederick Garnet Collins ( died 1946 )

It says he was a friend of Jane Sage on gravestone

I'm away at the moment and the photo I have is back home

Thanks

Thomas' original destination Chapelton is probably Capelton, Quebec near the town of North Hatley which is about half an hour from the Vermont border. St. Johnsbury is is northern Vermont and apparently where border crossing information was kept. Newport is a border town which I have visited many times, it is on the quite large Lake Memphremagog through which the Canada/USA border runs. It is accessible by boat or by road.
It might be a good idea to look into who he was going to in Capelton, possibly a relative? He then was probably lured by the bright lights of Toronto :D where job opportunities would have been much better.
The area of Quebec north of Vermont and NewHampshire, known as the Eastern Townships, was settled by New Englanders and British immigrants. It is now mostly French Canadian.

If Thomas died in Toronto in 1957 (but buried in Vermont) his death record would not be online. You would have to write to the bmd office in Toronto to purchase it. You could also try looking for a death notice on the Toronto Star newspaper website to conform where he did die, as you will probably need the exact municipality and/or county. In other words if he died in a nearby suburb, it might not be covered by Toronto's records.
