William CHALK

One last plea for help in this series. I have found a burial record for William on SEAX. He was buried as an infant on 27 Sep 1806 at Stow Maries. I have not, however, been able to find a corresponding baptism.

His parents were William CHALK and Sarah CHALK (née COLE). Their previous child Sarah Ann was born either late 1803 or early 1804, having been baptised at Stow Maries on 30 Jan 1804. She died young, being buried on 02 Nov 1805 at Stow Maries.

So presumably the earliest William could have been born is about Sep 1804, giving a two year period for his birth Sep 1804 - Sep 1806.

I'm afraid I can't see a baptism of William in the BT's for Stow Maries that are available.
There's also a burial, 25 October 1804, of Sarah Chalk, an infant.
Was there another Chalk family in Stow at the time, or was she also a daughter of William and Sarah?
And a third Sarah Chalk was buried there, 26 May 1811. That's from the NBI, there is no BT that year. Does the parish register give more info on her?
I believe we saw a likely candidate for Mary, baptized Stow Maries in 1801, give her place of birth as Cold Norton in one of the census returns. Well she may have been born there perhaps, but I don't think there are any Chalk baptisms there.
Perhaps William was buried without having been baptized? Or maybe there had been a private baptism at home that unfortunately did not get recorded in the parish register.

Sorry Ian. I have been slowly working my way through a number of outstanding replies.

As far as I know, William and Sarah had 13 children, including two named Sarah.

Sarah Ann CHALK - bap 30 Jan 1804 and bur 02 Nov 1805. (According to SEAX)
Sarah CHALK - bap 01 Apr 1810 and bur 26 May 1811 (Again according to SEAX)

I would guess that Sarah Ann is the one you are referring to, though it would indicate a discrepancy between the PR and BT.

There children are to the best of my knowledge: Mary (1801-1873), Sarah Ann (1804-1805), William (1806?-1806), Charlotte (1808-1865), Sarah (1810-1811), Jane (1812-1877), William (1814-1815), Rhoda (1815-1847), William (1817-1822), Thomas (1820-1856), James (1821-1822), James (1823-1892) and Ellen (1826-1888).

As you can see, they sometimes replaced a dead child by another of the same name.

With regard to Mary, I think the one that married John Long in 1839 @ Hornchurch is correct. I am still puzzled as to why she consistently claims to have been born in Cold Norton. I know that Cold Norton is near Stow Maries, so it is by no means a problem. She dies in 1873 and is buried in Stow Maries.

P.S. You mention a third Sarah, I can only see two, unless you mean the mother, for whom I have no burial.

Hi
Thank you for the detailed info.
From which, the big remaining puzzle seems to be what happened to William Chalk's wife Sarah after he died. And to which I am afraid I have found no answer.
It had crossed my mind that he might have had two wives, both called Sarah, but that appears to be very unlikely! Since Sarah died 1811 would be Sarah born 1810, and the births then continue on as before.
We shall find her eventually!
