Roderick MacKenzie

Postby Linda.frances » Mon Aug 28, 2017 8:56 am

My great grandfather was born in "New York". This information I have from various census records. His parents were Roderick MacKenzie(born Ross Shire) and Margaret Young born in Falkirk in 1819. My brick wall : Roderick and Margaret married in 1842 in Falkirk. The next sighting of Margaret has her living in Leith with her husband Alexander MacKenzie and 2 sons James and Roderick both boys having been born in "New York", in the 1851 census. The family story goes that Margaret returned to Scotland after the death of her husband. It has been established she had 3 other children born over there but who died. How can I find out where my great grandfather was born? How his father died and who is Alexander. ( cannot find any marriage certificate for him and Margaret in this country).

On Familysearch there are a couple of burials recorded for Mackenzie in the 1840s in Manhattan - but no name or name of parents or age so unhelpful.
However there are some possible hits if you look in the New York Passenger Lists 1820-1890
Margret b.1825 arrives 1848 but she seems to arrive with Gordon b. 1831. There is a Roderick b. 1810 who arrives in 1849.

According to the 1851 census, both son's birthplaces are Falkirk. But in the 1861 census, they are "USA" born. From 1871 onwards, Roderick MacKenzie's birthplace is either listed as "America" and/or "Subjects, North America born".

Where have you seen that he and his brother were born in "New York"? Is that in the actual census images on Scotland's People?

There is this interesting 1850 census record on Family Search, but it's probably a red herring:

New York City, Ward 16
Alexander McKenzie, age 32, born Scotland (occupation: plumber)
Jane M McKenzie, age 29, born Scotland
Alice McKenzie, age 4, born New York
Ann McKenzie, age 2, born New York
Roderick McKenzie, age 0, born New York
Margaret A McKenzie, age 19, born Scotland

Roderick MacKenzie's occupation in the Scottish 1861-1901 census reports is "plumber", as well.

I'm not sure if any of this will be new or helpful, but here it is, just in case:
