Occupations

On the 1911 census I have Inspector of Nuisances, as the occupation of a female. She was 37 and a widow. Would this be an unusual job for a woman?

It was someone employed by a parish or council to look for bad sanitary conditions, refuse heaps etc, known as 'nuisances' and to report them. It would have been unpleasant, and some might have considered it not very 'ladylike' but the fact that you've found a woman doing it shows the job wasn't confined to men.

Thank you for your replies. Her late husband had been an ironmonger.
