FREDERICK JAMES STEPHENS

Postby CliveStephens » Wed Aug 23, 2017 8:32 am

Frederick James Stephens was born 15/10/1890 at 34 Percy Street, Warrington the son of James Shirley Stephens and Actor and his wife Sarah Ann Stephens (nee Jones).
There is no trace of Frederick on the 1891 census but is baptised on the 20 /9/1893 at St Barnabas Church, Warrington.
On the 1901 census he is with an Aunt Emily Jones visiting his maternal Grandmother Louisa Jones at Great Jackson Street, Manchester.

He is shown as a Boiler- man on the 1911 census and he married Margaret Maud Phelan at St Winifreds Church, Hulme on the 10/05 1913 and with an address 16 Trafford St, Hulme.
A son James Stephens was born to them on the 13/06/1913 and a daughter Johanna was born in 1916 but she died the same year.
In 1915 he had enlisted in the Army and was discharged as medically unfit on the 10/09/1918. His papers say he intended to return to Hulme and take up an occupation as a Cinema Manager. The papers refer to his wife as "Maud Margaret Stephens".

I have been unable to trace anything further on Frederick, or wife Margaret on any of the GRO Registers.

As for the son James, the only subsequent piece of information that might relate to him is an Emigration to Ottawa, Ontario on the 25/04/ 1930 aboard the "Duchess of Bedford" organised by the Catholic Emigration Association. If this is the son of Frederickand Margaret, what has happened to them?

Any help would be appreciated to break down this "Brick Wall "

On the 1939 Register, Frederick Stephens (with matching DOB) is living at 31 Queen Street, Rhyl, Flintshire, Wales along with his wife Margaret Stephens. He is a night porter, she is a cook. Flintshire is now part of Denbighshire.

A Frederick J Stephens died aged 58 in AMJ 1949 in St Asaph, Denbighshire, Wales.
There are a number of deaths for Margaret Stephens born 1882 (DOB taken from 1939 register) in Wales after 1939 but most in the Glamorgan area. However there is a Maud Stephens born <1883> who died JFM 1961 in St Asaph, Denbighshire, Wales so she may be the most likely seeing as you already say she used both Margaret and Maud!

In 1939 James P Stephens with DOB is 13.6.1913 is a hotel barman living at 16 Trafford Street, Manchester, Lancashire.

A James P Stephens is married to Emily Ditcher AMJ 1940 in St Asaph, Denbighshire.
A Stephens/Ditcher daughter, Audrey, was born in Anglesey in OND 1940.

James P Stephens dies in JFM 1986 in Rhuddlan, Clwyd – his DOB is given as 30 June 1913 which is similar: 13 vs 30, possibly a typo?

Only some proper digging and certificates can prove the real links but hopefully it’s on the right tracks…

Many thanks for the information. I have now successfully traced all the details of Frederick , his wife Margaret Maud, and the son James Patrick Stephens.
James Patrick Stephens married in 1940 and I will post a separate query relative to his wife , Emily Ditcher.
