BEF evacuation 18 June 1940

Postby janmlawson » Sat Aug 19, 2017 12:33 pm

I know my grandfather Frederic Harrison Army No. 2318114 was evacuated from France on the 18 June 1940 because I have his military records. Is there any way I can find where he left from? He was a member of the Royal Corp of Signals.

BEF evacuation 18 June 1940

Operation Ariel (sometimes Aeriel) was the code name for the evacuation of troops from France between 14 June - 25 June 1940. Briefly, following the evacuation from Dunkirk, troops that were further west had to be evacuated from ports along the western coastline of France, such as St Nazaire. There are quite a lot of sites on this operation that would be useful. However, the site for the RC of Signals might have useful information too.

Logically (he said hopefully) his records should say what company(?) of the RCS he was allocated to, in which case you need to find where that company was. War Diaries maybe? If the company was attached to a division, say, then it may be simpler to track the division simply because it's bigger.

But that's about as much as I can contribute because I have no certainty how to do that.

Thanks for the advice. I have emailed the RCS with what I know and I will see if they can suggest anything.

I have not heard from the RCS but, looking more closely at the military records, I found he was attached to the 1st Armoured Division which was rescued from Cherbourg. So I am going to use that for my records until someone tells me otherwise.
